Mambo Milosz on Marinetta Ombro Project

  1. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:07] let’s get started?

  2. Mambo Milosz

    [4:07] Okay.

  3. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:07] ok

  4. Mambo Milosz

[4:07] Let me explain a little bit to start with.

[4:08] Rosario is a five year project so far, although we have only been in SL

    [4:08] for a year.

[4:08] The original idea was to bind together elements of a BA multimedia course

[4:08] and it grew from there into a virtual culture.

[4:09] Our aim is not to model a world but to try to model the culture within that world, and to use that

[4:09] as the basis for an exploratory pedagogy.

[4:09] What we will do now is show you around some of the island (which is still very incomplete)

[4:09] and explain what we are intending to do – and how.

  5. Poinky Malaprop

[4:09] Let me also first say, that in case you are not aware, this is a meeting of the Kuurian Expediton, and we’re very happy that Mambo is giving us this tour. If you have questions about the K.E. send me an IM.

  6. Mambo Milosz

[4:09] Then we will finish off at the teaching square, where we can chat.

  7. Decka Mah

    [4:10] great

  8. Corwin Carillon

    [4:10] cool!

  9. Arden Voss

    [4:10] ok

  10. Mambo Milosz

[4:10] On the tourHUDs, which are made by Electric Sheep, you will see 11 images

[4:10] when you click on one it will give you some text. if you click Go Here you will get a landmark.

[4:11] That is how we will avoid getting lost 🙂

  11. Corwin Carillon

    [4:11] kk

  12. Mambo Milosz

[4:11] One more thing. We have switched flying off for specific reasons we will discuss later, so in most areas you will have to

[4:11] walk or use public transport.

  13. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:11] or… skate!

  14. Mambo Milosz

[4:12] The second image is Giraf.

  15. Second Life

    [4:12] Rosarian Development Tour v1.0 gave you 2 Giraf, Rosario C2 (99, 139, 40).

  16. Courtney Mojo

    [4:12] Jiraf

  17. Mambo Milosz

[4:12] Before we go there let us walk down here a little way.

    [4:12] OOps

[4:12] This is an open space designed eiher as a club or a meeting area

[4:13] And this is the public baths built because a) it fitted into the story and b) we wantedto show the students what was possible without too much prior knowledge.

[4:14] And this is a road sign. If you touch it you get a notecard.

[4:14] The notecards will be filled with Rosarian history and anecdotes, because the culture is supposed to be self documenting.

  18. Arden Voss

    [4:14] what language is it?

  19. Mambo Milosz

[4:14] They also give the street name and the house owners.

    [4:14] Ido.

  20. Courtney Mojo

    [4:14] Ido is the language

  21. Mambo Milosz

[4:14] Do you know about Ido?

  22. Corwin Carillon

    [4:14] nope

  23. Arden Voss

    [4:15] no, i don’t

  24. Mambo Milosz

[4:15] Okay. It splintered from esperanto in 1906.

[4:15] It is much more latin based and since Rosario is in the mediterranean that made it suitable.

  25. Courtney Mojo

[4:15] And it is more logical than Esperanto, in many ways.

  26. Mambo Milosz

[4:16] We did not want english as the native language, nor a nordic language. neither would have made sense. So we opted to have

  27. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:16] what’s wrong with suomeksi?

  28. Mambo Milosz

[4:16] all the public signs and notices in Ido and then have them translated into englisg swedish german and so on.

[4:16] Who heard of an island just north of libya speaking finnish 🙂

  29. Courtney Mojo

[4:16] Finnish is not a very suitable language for a Mediterranean island. And the school that originated the project

    [4:16] is Swedish speaking.

  30. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:17] Heja sverige!

  31. Arden Voss

[4:17] do you all speak ido?

  32. Mambo Milosz

[4:17] So we have built a plausible justification for swedish as a 2nd or 3rd language here.

[4:17] We all write ido 🙂

[4:17] I am sitting here with the Ido dictionary beside me (true)

  33. Courtney Mojo

[4:17] Well we don’t communicate in Ido, but it’s a very easy langage that anyone can learn.

  34. Mambo Milosz

[4:17] Vi esas bono i ido

  35. Courtney Mojo

    [4:17] Si

  36. Mambo Milosz

    [4:18] Anway on we go!

  37. Poinky Malaprop

[4:18] so you don’t yet have ppl who can’t cmmunicate with each other, except for in Ido on the project?

  38. Mambo Milosz

    [4:18] Please don’t.

[4:18] We started using esperanto and we actually met RL people who were bringing up

[4:18] children who ONLY spoke esperanto.

  39. Courtney Mojo

[4:18] The ido assosication is very small.

  40. Mambo Milosz

[4:18] Where are the social services when you need them?

    [4:18] 🙂

  41. Poinky Malaprop

[4:19] but, I meant Ido could be used so ppl from different countries with no other common language to communicate

  42. Courtney Mojo

[4:19] Yes.. that’s what esperanto has tried..

  43. Mambo Milosz

[4:19] Yes indeed, and all the shops and advertyisemnets are in Ido, and we DO have some pop music in Ido waiting for us to broadcast

  44. Courtney Mojo

    [4:20] Yes

  45. babbler 2.0q

[4:20] Ludo welcome to Babbler. Have fun!

    [4:20] Babbler Ready.

  46. Mambo Milosz

    [4:20] Did somebody just arrive?

    [4:20] No, okay.

  47. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:20] cattinoir?

  48. Cattinnoir Innis

    [4:20] Yep

  49. Mambo Milosz

[4:20] Have you got a tourHUD?

  50. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:20] hi

  51. Courtney Mojo

    [4:20] Hi and welcome

  52. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:20] From Denmark – hi all

  53. Corwin Carillon

    [4:20] hiya cattinnoir

  54. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:20] Read about this in newsletter

  55. Decka Mah

    [4:21] Hi Cattinnoir

  56. Cattinnoir Innis

    [4:21] Yes

  57. Mambo Milosz

[4:21] Okay this is the west shore, where there was once a major disaster and erosion.

[4:22] Rather than walking everywhere let us use the HUD and go to Giraf

[4:22] It is the second image in the first column

  58. Courtney Mojo

[4:22] Hold on Mambo, not everyone is here yet

  59. Mambo Milosz

    [4:22] Okay

  60. Courtney Mojo

    [4:22] ok

  61. Mambo Milosz

[4:23] If you bring up Giraf and then click Go Here you should get a landmark

  62. Second Life

    [4:23] Rosarian Development Tour v1.0 gave you 2 Giraf, Rosario C2 (99, 139, 40).

  63. Courtney Mojo

    [4:23] Jiraf

  64. Mambo Milosz

[4:23] Click on it and we will meet you there

  65. Courtney Mojo

[4:23] The shop is called Jiraf, it’s Ido

  66. Mambo Milosz

    [4:23] Sorry!

[4:24] Right we saved ourselves a walk up the hill.

[4:24] Because we want students to be able to build easily we have made a lot of small units where they can try ideas.

  67. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:24] did we lose Catt?

  68. Mambo Milosz

[4:24] I don’t think the skyboards are for sale yet.

  69. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:25] Here, new in SL so still clumsy 🙂

  70. Mambo Milosz

    [4:25] No probs

[4:25] So this is a selection of skyboards that are scripted but not yet put into vendors.

  71. Poinky Malaprop

[4:25] Cattinoir: do we have permission to pubilsh your comments as part of the transcript?

  72. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:26] Yes go ahead no problem

  73. Mambo Milosz

[4:26] And here we have Jiraf (did I say oit right?) which is a functioning clothes store with handmade Rosarian clothes

  74. Courtney Mojo

    [4:26] yes very good .:)

  75. Arden Voss

[4:27] All the clothes are whispering to me at the same time

  76. Mambo Milosz

[4:27] If you click on them you get the IDO translated into english.

  77. Courtney Mojo

[4:27] They are noicy clothes. 🙂

  78. Mambo Milosz

[4:27] We are working on a Rosarian HUD that would translate the ido into different languages

  79. Courtney Mojo

[4:27] It’s part of Jirafs marketing I guess.

  80. Mambo Milosz

    [4:27] They are!

  81. Corwin Carillon

[4:27] are these all made by the students?

  82. Mambo Milosz

[4:28] Students and staff (but not us)

[4:28] We are using this for the introduction to layer sin Photoshop!

  83. Poinky Malaprop

[4:28] hi Meja – are you here for the tour?

  84. Meja Milosz

    [4:28] In a way 🙂

  85. Mambo Milosz

    [4:28] Hi

  86. Meja Milosz

    [4:28] Hi

  87. Courtney Mojo

    [4:28] hey

  88. Mambo Milosz

[4:28] do you want a customised HUD?

  89. Meja Milosz

    [4:28] Of course, Mambo 🙂

  90. Mambo Milosz

    [4:29] Just wear it

[4:29] Thjis, when it rezzes, is the newspaper office.

  91. Arden Voss

    [4:29] oops sorry

  92. Mambo Milosz

[4:29] The side walls give you a notecard about the newspaper.

  93. Second Life

[4:29] Object gave you Informo di Jurnalo.

  94. Mambo Milosz

[4:30] The table gives you an RSS feed of the headlines and the laptop opens your browser to the web site.

[4:30] When we finally get html on prims we will do a lot with this

[4:31] We have a Marinetta Ombro site for the development teamand this is its shop

  95. Poinky Malaprop

[4:31] Have you seen Jeff Barr’s HTML on a prim system?

  96. Mambo Milosz

[4:31] The maps show you where Rosario is.

[4:31] I was reading about it, but I haven’t seen it yet.

[4:32] So Rosario is halfway between Crete and Malta and between Greece and Libya, which makes it ideal for us.

  97. Poinky Malaprop

[4:32] The map assumes that you know where Malta and Crete are .. 🙂

  98. Meja Milosz

    [4:32] 🙂

  99. Mambo Milosz

[4:32] Students have been challenged to make the history (which is on the website) by finding gaps in the official history

[4:33] and inserting whatever we needed there.

[4:33] So we asked: what happened to Rosario in the crusades?

[4:33] Was it part of the Moorsih empire?

    [4:33] and so on.

[4:33] This is the LaTubo shop.

[4:34] Only the left wall panel does anything

[4:34] It gives you a notecard about la grizondi.

  100. Second Life

[4:34] Object gave you La Grizondo proposed.

  101. Mambo Milosz

[4:34] The grizondi are a form of travel on the island.

[4:35] We will also be building a railway and a student has a prototype Segway for travelling around the roads here.

[4:35] Lets go to the next stop which is La Galerie

  102. Ludo Merit

    [4:35] Segway?

  103. Mambo Milosz

[4:35] the next one down on your hud

[4:36] Those one wheel gyroscopic things that nobody uses 🙂

  104. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:36] Can I have a copyo of the mud?

  105. Mambo Milosz

[4:36] You might recognise a Segway when you see the mocdel

    [4:36] HUD?

    [4:36] mud?

  106. Cattinnoir Innis

    [4:36] 🙂 yeah

  107. Mambo Milosz

[4:36] Of course, did I not give you one?

  108. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:37] Dunno, can’t find it anyway

    [4:37] thx

  109. Mambo Milosz

[4:37] The HUDS are customisable by the way.

[4:37] They are very simple to use to make tours

  110. Ludo Merit

    [4:37] Hmmm.

  111. Mambo Milosz

    [4:37] Okay, the galerie.

    [4:37] Everyone ready?

  112. Ludo Merit

    [4:37] Do directions come with?

  113. Mambo Milosz

[4:38] Yes there are instructions in the box and more in the hud itself

[4:38] You can get it free at SLBoutique

    [4:38] Okay. 1 2 3 go 🙂

    [4:38] La Galerie

[4:40] They take a bit longer to rezz but they work.

  114. Arden Voss

    [4:40] work how

  115. Mambo Milosz

[4:40] They are more detailed at a longer distance at least on my laptop.

  116. Decka Mah

[4:40] Poinky …no skating in the gallery

  117. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:41] aaawww

  118. Mambo Milosz

[4:41] Oh I don’t know. It might be a better use for the floor 🙂

  119. Decka Mah

    [4:41] lol

  120. Poinky Malaprop

[4:41] did you explain why you have pictures of sheep?

  121. Mambo Milosz

[4:41] ‘We have another large space like this too. That will be used as a science museum

  122. Courtney Mojo

[4:41] Yes I’d like to know that too? LOL

  123. Mambo Milosz

    [4:41] Erm no.

  124. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:41] These are nice – surprisingly high res for my poor office PC graphics cared 🙂

  125. Mambo Milosz

[4:42] Well, we rented some sheep for the summer, and here they are 🙂

  126. Decka Mah

[4:42] what do you rent a sheep for?

  127. Mambo Milosz

[4:42] Yes that is what I meant by 1024pixels working.

[4:42] They do seem hi-res to me too, compared otthe other graphics

[4:42] Do you mean how much? They were free

    [4:42] Oh, why?

[4:43] They ate the grass at the summer house and saved days of mowing.

  128. Arden Voss

[4:43] could you show us a comparison to low rez?

  129. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:43] and they taste good!

  130. Mambo Milosz

[4:43] Instead I just walked round with a bucket the whole time…

[4:43] Okay. hold on. A low res experiment.

  131. Poinky Malaprop

[4:44] that sheep is different somehow..

  132. Mambo Milosz

    [4:44] better fed

  133. Decka Mah

    [4:44] kewl-er

  134. Mambo Milosz

[4:44] That’s not a fair comparison because it is a much flatter image anyway.

  135. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:44] overdue for shearing

  136. Mambo Milosz

    [4:44] 🙂

  137. Arden Voss

[4:45] no, but the idea is clear.

  138. Mambo Milosz

    [4:45] Okay.

[4:45] Now let us walk up here and out and I will show you where a German student from Berlin will be building her own gallery shop, starting tomorrow

[4:45] That is some news for Courtney 🙂

[4:46] I was talking to her an hour ago and she is ready to start!

[4:47] This will be the coinema

  139. Meja Milosz

    [4:47] Hi Rav

  140. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:47] over here ppl!

  141. Rav Sassoon

    [4:47] Hya

[4:47] is this an official tour?

  142. Meja Milosz

    [4:47] Yep

    [4:47] You need a hud

  143. Poinky Malaprop

    [4:47] follow me?

  144. Rav Sassoon

    [4:47] Hya Coutney

  145. Poinky Malaprop

[4:48] we’re still missing some ppl

  146. Decka Mah

    [4:48] courtney is with them

  147. Mambo Milosz

[4:48] Okay this old palace is being moved tomorrow and will be replaced by a garden and gallery

  148. Arden Voss

[4:49] they’re grouped at the exit of the museum

  149. Courtney Mojo

    [4:49] Honey..

  150. Decka Mah

    [4:49] courtney has them

  151. Ludo Merit

    [4:49] Which one?

  152. Decka Mah

    [4:49] Over here!

  153. Courtney Mojo

[4:49] What do I have? SOrry missed that as I tried to keep everyone along.

  154. Rav Sassoon

    [4:49] hya Mambo

    [4:49] courtney

  155. Mambo Milosz

    [4:49] Wear that hud Rav

[4:50] Okay this old palace was built by a student who also built the town of Pedrokampulo.

[4:50] That is the next stop.

  156. Ludo Merit

[4:50] I think it is the white building that was built by a student who also built a town, and the white building that will soon be removed.

  157. Rav Sassoon

    [4:50] ok done

  158. Mambo Milosz

[4:50] Bottom left on your HUD

[4:50] Yes it is. You will recognise the style when you get to Pedrokampulo

  159. Ludo Merit

[4:50] But it might be the blue one.

  160. Arden Voss

[4:51] there are no textures. is that intentional

  161. Mambo Milosz

[4:51] No it is this one with arches and cuploas

    [4:51] Yes.

[4:51] Okay Bottom left on your HUD

  162. Second Life

    [4:51] Rosarian Development Tour v1.0 gave you 4 Pedrokampulo, Rosario A2 (207, 199, 25).

  163. Ludo Merit

[4:51] no tetxtures? looks like some on top.

  164. Arden Voss

    [4:51] sorry mambo

[4:52] it’s a rule there are no textures ued?

    [4:52] used?

  165. Mambo Milosz

[4:52] There are textures here actually but they are too subtle. He is retexturing it in the next semester, and finishing the door system

[4:53] This is actually quite sizeable in terms of rooms and places for shopsand so on.

  166. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:53] Quite impressive – this built by one student?

  167. Courtney Mojo

    [4:53] jEs

  168. Mambo Milosz

[4:54] Yes, to a design not of our choosing, but what could we say?

  169. Cattinnoir Innis

    [4:54] 🙂

  170. Mambo Milosz

[4:54] It is impressive enough to build upon I think

  171. Cattinnoir Innis

    [4:54] Agree

  172. Arden Voss

[4:54] what could you say. Do they make sketches first

  173. Courtney Mojo

[4:54] It does have a Mediterranean look and feel though.

  174. Mambo Milosz

[4:54] When you go in the spaces they are actually interestingly labyrintine

  175. Cattinnoir Innis

    [4:55] Yes pretty authentic

  176. Mambo Milosz

[4:55] He has promised to add different textures to enable people to find their way.

  177. Poinky Malaprop

[4:55] why have you disabled flying?

  178. Mambo Milosz

    [4:55] Ah, let me explain.

[4:56] We haven’t disabled flying, we have enabled distance.

[4:56] If you go to Caledon, what is the railway for?

[4:56] It is wonderful but it takes you everywhere slower than you could fly.

[4:56] So what are cars and bikes (and Segways) for?

[4:57] They are just toys if you don’t have to use them.

[4:57] So we want the students to use their imaginations. The Segway came from a students frustration at not moving faster…

[4:57] PLUS, we have discovered that griefers melt away if they can’t fly.

  179. Rav Sassoon

    [4:57] 🙂

  180. Cattinnoir Innis

[4:58] Cool I like that approach – allows for and requires more creativity

  181. Ludo Merit

    [4:58] A good point.

  182. Mambo Milosz

[4:58] AND we want the island to have unexplored lonely areas, which doesn’t happen with flying because everywhere is the same distance more or less from everywhere else

  183. Poinky Malaprop

[4:58] but you can TP ?

  184. Rav Sassoon

[4:58] Mambo whats wrong with toys ? isn;t sl a type of toy?

[4:58] i understand the distance thing though 🙂

  185. Ludo Merit

[4:59] It’s not wha’ts wrong with toys it’s whats wrong with JUST toys.

  186. Courtney Mojo

[4:59] You can teleport and la tubo connects the central points of the island.

  187. Mambo Milosz

[4:59] Nothing is wrong with toys at all. ANd yes SL is. I merely mean that flying-as-a-toy puts paid to lots of other games

  188. Rav Sassoon

    [4:59] i know what u mean 🙂

  189. Mambo Milosz

[4:59] This green thing is a grizondo

[4:59] If you touch it you get instrudtion.

[4:59] If you touch the hand you get a dialog

  190. Meja Milosz

    [5:00] In ido…! 🙂

  191. Mambo Milosz

[5:00] It then brings up the map set to tp you to your destination.

    [5:00] Yes in ido 🙂

[5:00] There is a major problem with this which I have talked to ythe Lindens about.

  192. Courtney Mojo

[5:00] Yes in Ido, It wouln’t make sence in any other language

  193. Meja Milosz

    [5:00] Perfect!

  194. Mambo Milosz

    [5:00] The prob is:

  195. Second Life

[5:00] Object gave you Informo di Grizondo.

  196. Mambo Milosz

[5:00] 1. the map is an appallingly clumsy way to do this

[5:01] 2. landmarks are even worse because you get a duplicate every time you use it.

  197. Poinky Malaprop

[5:01] any response from the Lindens?

  198. Mambo Milosz

[5:01] So what we need is a scriptable way to tp via a dialog box that is not a landmark or the map

  199. Poinky Malaprop

    [5:01] llTeleportAgent…

  200. Mambo Milosz

[5:01] Wel, as you can imagine, they understood the idea but it was about 1 million on their list of things to do…

[5:02] We are taking a long time – or the tour is longer than I imagined.

  201. Meja Milosz

    [5:02] 🙂

  202. Arden Voss

    [5:02] lets skip the sheep

  203. Rav Sassoon

[5:02] how about flying carpets? 🙂

  204. Courtney Mojo

[5:02] IT always does that doesen’t it?

  205. Mambo Milosz

[5:03] The next 4 stops were just designed to show you some fairly empty rural spaces so I was going to suggest we just see the cows

[5:03] The farm id the center of the top row. The reason to show you is because it uses HUGE PRIMS

  206. Poinky Malaprop

[5:03] ok. We can always come back on our own

  207. Mambo Milosz

    [5:03] Indeed you can.

  208. Courtney Mojo

[5:03] And are very welcome to!

  209. Mambo Milosz

[5:04] Vulponesto also uses those big prims

[5:04] and they make it much easier in lots of ways.

  210. Ludo Merit

    [5:04] Are those ‘bad’

  211. Mambo Milosz

[5:04] Was it Poinky who was talking about them in SLED?

    [5:04] Depends who you believe.

  212. Ludo Merit

[5:05] So greatly discouraged that I can[‘t find out how to do it.

  213. Mambo Milosz

[5:05] The Lindens have said that they will not remove them unless they are causing problems.

    [5:05] Do what?

  214. Ludo Merit

    [5:05] make them.

  215. Mambo Milosz

    [5:05] I can give you a set.

  216. Poinky Malaprop

    [5:05] I wasn’t talking about them

  217. Ludo Merit

    [5:05] Thank you.

  218. Poinky Malaprop

[5:05] I think thought they closed the bug that allowed them to be created

  219. Mambo Milosz

[5:05] Nobody can make them anymore. They closed the loophole, but existing ones still work.

[5:06] They did, but if you have them you have them. There is a group giving them away free.

    [5:06] so I got some.

  220. Ludo Merit

    [5:06] Copyable?

  221. Poinky Malaprop

[5:06] so are we going there next? La Vestifarmo?

  222. Mambo Milosz

[5:06] Yes, but they behave oddly. I tried to hollow one and it didn’t hollow.

    [5:07] Vestifarmo. Let’s go!

  223. Ludo Merit

    [5:07] Uh huh.

  224. Second Life

    [5:07] Rosarian Development Tour v1.0 gave you 5. La Farmo, Rosario C3 (82, 47, 25).

  225. Mambo Milosz

[5:08] Yup, thats the Segway 🙂

  226. Meja Milosz

    [5:08] 🙂

  227. Poinky Malaprop

[5:08] Mambo – is it ok to post screen shots of all of this?

  228. Mambo Milosz

[5:08] It just needs the poses added

    [5:08] Sure

[5:08] Okay the grass here is all 32 x 32 prims

[5:09] because it saves 8 out of every 9…

[5:10] So flying is on here, which is why we got that

  229. Decka Mah

    [5:10] jet pack wokring

  230. Mambo Milosz

[5:10] Because building is absurdly difficult without flying!

  231. Ludo Merit

    [5:11] True

  232. Mambo Milosz

[5:11] Okay, does anyone have any questions, before we skip to the last stop – the teaching area?

  233. Ludo Merit

[5:12] Are classes here open to the public, ever?

  234. Mambo Milosz

[5:12] Okay La Kolegio Ilana then, and we can talk there. I have a couple of boards of things that explain some of this (I hope)

  235. Decka Mah

[5:12] Poinky MUST you ride the cows…this is not a rodeo

  236. Corwin Carillon

    [5:12] lol

  237. Mambo Milosz

    [5:13] Hmmm

    [5:13] 1 2 3 – la Kolegio!

  238. Arden Voss

    [5:13] riding a cow with rollerskates…

  239. Mambo Milosz

    [5:13] Hey ho!

  240. Second Life

    [5:13] Rosarian Development Tour v1.0 gave you 12 Kolegio Ilana, Rosario C2 (153, 77, 40).

  241. Mambo Milosz

[5:14] I am not sure how long this takes to rezz

[5:14] It is from the ICT room in Info Island

  242. Ludo Merit

[5:14] I have it, but I have a good machine.

  243. Mambo Milosz

[5:14] Can anyone else read it?

  244. Arden Voss

    [5:15] nope

  245. Cattinnoir Innis

    [5:15] *envies Ludo*

  246. Mambo Milosz

[5:15] Have you got it all Ludo?

[5:15] It is a giant board that displays text leter by letter. A bit fidlly to set up but worth experimenting with.

  247. Arden Voss

    [5:15] what’s it called?

  248. Mambo Milosz

    [5:16] Large Message BOard 1.2

[5:16] It is by someone Mariac in the ICT shop

  249. Poinky Malaprop

[5:16] What does "The Lone Ranger had to come before Deadwood" mean?

  250. Ludo Merit

[5:16] Both of the screens you have displayed.

  251. Mambo Milosz

[5:17] Can you read the rest Poinky?

  252. Corwin Carillon

[5:17] Dedric’s … but the rendeering is not good …

[5:17] you’d be better using flickr and bringing it in

  253. Mambo Milosz

[5:17] No it isn’t sadly. It seems VERy suscpetible to lag.

  254. Poinky Malaprop

    [5:17] I can read eeything I think

  255. Cattinnoir Innis

    [5:18] *Sighs …*

  256. Mambo Milosz

[5:18] I agree. This was an experiment for a class I am starting next week, and I think I will now look for another strategy

  257. Cattinnoir Innis

    [5:18] Still gobbledygook

  258. Ludo Merit

[5:18] I had to move my pov to get the caps. It’s othewise ok.

  259. Arden Voss

    [5:18] pov?

  260. Ludo Merit

    [5:18] point of view

  261. Mambo Milosz

[5:19] The Lone Ranger remark was about the fact that McLuhan once said that all new media have an old medium as their initial content

[5:19] Early movies were filmed theatre

[5:19] Early TV was radio with pictures.

[5:19] The Lone Ranger was radio with pictures. If you get reruns you can test this: turn your back and

[5:19] keep listening and you miss nothing at all.

  262. Second Life

    [5:20] Ludo Merit nods.

  263. Arden Voss

[5:20] And techniques become artforms when they’re redundant

  264. Mambo Milosz

[5:20] So our idea is that this is a new medium.

[5:20] Things like WebCT and Blackboard are like the Lone Ranger.

  265. Themanc Sodwind

    [5:20] lol

  266. Mambo Milosz

[5:20] They are classroom taching placed into a new box.

[5:20] Our experiment here is to try to work out what you can actually do in the new box.

    [5:21] if thast makes sense…

  267. Ludo Merit

    [5:21] Oh, does it!

  268. Arden Voss

[5:21] what do the studwents think?

  269. Mambo Milosz

[5:21] Some get it and some want to do "proper" projects.

  270. Cattinnoir Innis

[5:22] Well some are more artist others techies

  271. Mambo Milosz

[5:22] That is they want to make a pretend site for Pepsi because it seems real, even though it is suprememly useless.

[5:22] No those who get it can be either.

  272. Arden Voss

    [5:22] what do they get?

  273. Ludo Merit

[5:22] I believe in a high fun per prim ratio.

  274. Mambo Milosz

[5:22] We have techies who just don’t question why they would be scripting and having this much fun.

  275. Arden Voss

    [5:22] so they get ‘fun’

  276. Mambo Milosz

    [5:22] What do they get?

  277. Arden Voss

[5:23] yes, you say they get it or not

  278. Ludo Merit

[5:23] The ability to think outside the prim.

  279. Mambo Milosz

[5:23] They understand that playing = learning = fun= job opportunities.

[5:24] And learning = never knowing enough = using last year’s software because nobody taught you the upgrade

  280. Arden Voss

[5:24] not so fast… what do they learn, except building and scripting

  281. Mambo Milosz

    [5:24] Oh, sorry I misunderstood.

[5:24] We have had tourism students deisgning a genuine vistor strategy for here.

  282. Arden Voss

    [5:24] yes!

  283. Mambo Milosz

[5:24] They toured SL trying to understand the "market" and then came up with suggestions about how we could make this place

    [5:25] attractive

  284. Ludo Merit

    [5:25] I could use them.

  285. Courtney Mojo

    [5:25] 🙂

  286. Mambo Milosz

[5:25] We have had nurses making a ciommunit health plan, and business students devising business strategies

    [5:25] *community*

  287. Courtney Mojo

[5:25] I guess the thing is that it’s much easier to do one course involved in the project.

  288. Arden Voss

[5:25] so it’s the design students facilitating others

  289. Mambo Milosz

    [5:25] In a way yes.

  290. Courtney Mojo

[5:26] But some students sometimes feels it’s all about this and want to do other things too.

  291. Mambo Milosz

[5:26] But the health plan was made before we had this, on the basis of work done as much by the language groups (who

[5:26] were active generating history and geography) as by the media students

  292. Arden Voss

[5:26] do the design students talk to other students about what they need?

  293. Courtney Mojo

[5:27] The students groups we have are pretty small, but sometimes yes.

  294. Mambo Milosz

[5:27] Yes, the current stage involves making the design student projects end with them selling things here.

  295. Courtney Mojo

[5:27] Mostly the same students do both programming, designing and background story, but not always.

  296. Arden Voss

    [5:27] using business studnets reports

  297. Mambo Milosz

[5:27] The next stage involves matching them with business students to produce in-world companies.

  298. Arden Voss

    [5:27] ok!

  299. Mambo Milosz

[5:28] If you do a Photoshop course to learn layers, masks and channels, then

  300. Courtney Mojo

[5:28] We also have exchange students coming from other countries who participate in the project

  301. Ludo Merit

[5:28] Are any classes open to the public?

  302. Mambo Milosz

    [5:28] They will be.

  303. Courtney Mojo

[5:28] International co-operation always brings new aspects to the teaching and learning.

[5:29] And to the project itself.

  304. Arden Voss

[5:29] is there a plan to keep in touch with the foreign students through sl?

  305. Mambo Milosz

[5:29] What we are hoping to do this year is to make Rosario self-sustaining.

  306. Courtney Mojo

    [5:29] Yes,

  307. Mambo Milosz

[5:29] Yes we do keep in contact with them.

  308. Courtney Mojo

[5:29] We are also planning on involving their "home" instituitons

  309. Arden Voss

    [5:29] how

  310. Mambo Milosz

[5:30] We want to rent land, in a way similar to Caledon, where people are interested in the same "game" but not in an rpg sense

  311. Arden Voss

    [5:30] rpg?

  312. Courtney Mojo

[5:30] By for instance sending them information about the project in advance and have them doing a project within their institution before actually coming here

    [5:30] to do the exchange

  313. Mambo Milosz

[5:30] We don’t see this as a classroom online so much as an online country where you can learn things – and which contains classrooms.

  314. Cattinnoir Innis

    [5:30] Interesting approach

  315. Courtney Mojo

[5:30] Most of our teaching is project based

  316. Poinky Malaprop

[5:31] are you working with other groups, like USC’s virtual Diplomacy project?

  317. Mambo Milosz

[5:31] And we don’t think that we will gain anything by either being exclusive or by hiding 🙂

  318. Courtney Mojo

[5:31] Theory combined always with some kind of task.

  319. Mambo Milosz

[5:31] Not yet, although I have beentalking with Ordinal Malaprop on Caledon a lot about what we are doing.

  320. Courtney Mojo

[5:31] Not yet, but we have started planning with some in-world institutions. And are happy to do more co-operation.

  321. Mambo Milosz

[5:31] We thought we should get enough mapped out here so that what we said made visual sense.

  322. Courtney Mojo

    [5:32] YEs

  323. Poinky Malaprop

[5:32] The Kuurian Exp had a meeting last Sunday on online tourism – maybe some of your students would have been interested

  324. Mambo Milosz

[5:32] We have also been talking IRL with people from Info Island.

[5:32] Yes, and some staf too I expect

  325. Courtney Mojo

[5:32] I am sure they would.

[5:33] We also are a bit understaffed here, so we don’t always have the opportunity to do everything that we want ! 🙂

  326. Mambo Milosz

[5:33] How often do the Kuurian Expedition meet?

  327. Poinky Malaprop

[5:33] We need some better ways for different groups to be aware of each others activities

  328. Courtney Mojo

    [5:33] Definetly

  329. Mambo Milosz

[5:33] Yes, that is one thing we want to do with La Grizondon.

  330. Ludo Merit

[5:33] Agreed. I’m in 25 groups trying to keep track of my interests and it isn’t nearly enough.

  331. Mambo Milosz

[5:34] The grizondo tp you places, but we can use them as miniembassies – putting them

[5:34] places where we have a mutual interest

[5:34] So that there is something between groups and the map as a way of linking people and places.

  332. Courtney Mojo

[5:27] The students groups we have are pretty small, but sometimes yes.

  333. Mambo Milosz

[5:27] Yes, the current stage involves making the design student projects end with them selling things here.

  334. Courtney Mojo

[5:27] Mostly the same students do both programming, designing and background story, but not always.

    [5:35] They only take 1.5 x 1.5 m 🙂

[5:35] I mention this because if anyone thinks it is a good idea (or might be) we are about ready to implement it!

  371. Second Life

[5:35] Grace McDunnough accepted your inventory offer.

  372. Ludo Merit

    [5:36] Hmmm.

  373. Mambo Milosz

[5:36] Is there a Kuurian Expedition web site?

  374. Poinky Malaprop

    [5:37] hmm

  375. Mambo Milosz

[5:37] or where are you putting the transcript?

  376. Poinky Malaprop

[5:37] there is http://arden.blogs.com/swn where we post meeting announcments

[5:37] the transcript will probably be posted on https://signpostmarvmartin.wordpress.com/

  377. Mambo Milosz

    [5:38] Okay!

  378. Decka Mah

[5:38] today I got a new HUD that lets you blog straight form SL to wordpress blogs

  379. Corwin Carillon

    [5:38] BlogHUD

  380. Poinky Malaprop

[5:38] do you offer resources/space for other educators?

  381. Decka Mah

    [5:38] yes

  382. Mambo Milosz

    [5:38] Oh really!

    [5:38] Yes we do.

  383. Courtney Mojo

[5:38] Sounds like a good Hud

  384. Decka Mah

[5:39] excellent adn easy to use

  385. Mambo Milosz

[5:39] If you have a project or an idea then yes please

  386. Corwin Carillon

[5:39] Koz’s tool … although it crashes with smoe chars

  387. Arden Voss

[5:39] Sorry, folks, but I have to go. Thank you very much.

  388. Poinky Malaprop

[5:39] so, interested people shoudl contact you or courtney?

  389. Cattinnoir Innis

[5:39] i’d like that HUD if possible

  390. Corwin Carillon

    [5:39] bye arden

  391. Courtney Mojo

[5:40] Both is fine. Or either one : )

  392. Arden Voss

    [5:40] Bye

  393. Mambo Milosz

[5:40] And also if anyone want to rent land in an area guaranteed to be free of grief

    [5:40] Either 🙂

[5:40] you can email us at mambo.milosz@gmail.com

    [5:40] or

    [5:40] courtney.mojo@gmail.com

  394. Poinky Malaprop

[5:40] and, you mentioned that you are understaffed – are you looking for people to help in any way?

  395. Mambo Milosz

[5:41] Yes, definitely. It was never meant that we would do it. We were always wanting to gather a wider team.

  396. Courtney Mojo

[5:41] Sure all project participation is help.

  397. Mambo Milosz

[5:41] We just felt we had to be able to make our core ideas reasonably clear first

  398. Corwin Carillon

[5:41] sounds like you get the first cohort of students to staff … alumni staffing

  399. Poinky Malaprop

    [5:41] right

  400. Corwin Carillon

    [5:41] could get

  401. Mambo Milosz

[5:41] before we could fairly ask other people to risk wasting their time with us.

  402. Courtney Mojo

[5:41] And it doesen’t mean that the help must be something we have planned, but something that we can plan together

[5:42] and that fits into the project.

  403. Poinky Malaprop

[5:42] ok – well thanks Mambo and Courtney for this tour!

  404. Courtney Mojo
