  100. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:06] it is a project born out of *great* frustration

[19:06] can anyone guess what that frustration is?

  101. Sushma Sixgallery

    [19:06] money

    [19:07] ?

  102. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:07] lol

  103. Baba Yamamoto

[19:07] Baba, almost as big of a metaverse fanboy as snoopy

  104. Mark Barrett

[19:07] Mark Barrett, Privacy Advocate and random trouble maker.

  105. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:07] Removed Upon Request

  106. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:07] i got into sl about 3 years ago

[19:07] and i watched what was happening here

[19:07] all the little pieces of the future that were being prototyped

  107. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[19:07] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  108. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:07] that spread across video games and virtual worlds and 3d creation and maps and the web

[19:08] and no one had put all those things into a single conversation, into a framework of any kind

[19:08] i searched far and wide for it

    [19:08] i didn’t find one

[19:08] i found lots of awesome silos

[19:08] i found lots of experts and movers and shakers in different areas

  109. Poinky Malaprop

[19:08] Metaverse Sessions was the name of the podcast

  110. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:08] but i wasn’t finding any bridges between them

[19:08] so i set out to start the conversation that i wanted to hear

[19:09] how’s that for don quixote tilting at windmills?

  111. Maggie Marat

    [19:09] that’s the spirit!

  112. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:09] i like to say i have the coolest job ever

  113. Second Life

    [19:09] Peter Newell agrees.

  114. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:09] because i get to be a big picture guy working w/ a team that keeps my feet on the ground

[19:09] and i’m only allowed to spend 10% of my time on the present of the company 🙂

    [19:09] which i love

[19:09] you notice the title futurist

[19:10] kind of funny, but it’s really very simple

[19:10] i try to look at the world in motion

[19:10] watch the changes happening in technology, business, and culture

[19:10] and i focus on virtual worlds

[19:10] i’m a young guy too you should know

  115. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:10] he’s 90. i met him all futurists are 90 years old

  116. Maggie Marat

[19:10] Hey I read The World is Flat doesn’t that count for anything?

  117. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:10] i have that young guy spirit here, take on the world 🙂

  118. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:11] Removed Upon Request

  119. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:11] in my last job i worked w/ a nonprofit called the acceleration studies foundation or asf

[19:11] we did the accelerating change conferences at stanford

  120. Bjornson Donaldo

    [19:11] boo text

  121. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:11] in 2003-2005

  122. Keystone Bouchard

    [19:11] boooo – hehe

  123. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:11] Removed Upon Request

  124. Baba Yamamoto

[19:11] lets have a dual conversations while you type

  125. Maggie Marat

    [19:11] talk to me Snoop!

  126. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:12] in 2004 i joined and brought the virtual world scene to accelerating change

[19:12] that was back when sl had like 10,000 accounts or something

  127. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:12] hehe

[19:12] and I was at the WA

  128. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:12] and i was this crazy guy saying watch it!

[19:12] it was actually at ac2004 that the seeds of this project started

[19:12] the link is if you want to see

[19:13] "physical space, virtual space, and interface"

[19:13] all the podcasts are online

    [19:13] still great listening

  129. Baba Yamamoto

[19:13] i totally wanted to be at ac2004

  130. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:13] and i had this spirit then, as i was just out of art school and then graduate school for futures studies

  131. Master Penguin

[19:13] dont know not answering me

  132. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:13] that by curating conversations you could change the world

[19:13] maybe sounds crazy, but i didn’t think so 🙂

[19:14] that just like a museum or gallery

[19:14] where you hang different works side by side for effect

[19:14] you could hang different ideas side by side

[19:14] and make them more powerful by having them play off each other

[19:14] and i developed a kind of expertise at that i think

[19:14] last year i left asf for electric sheep

[19:15] i love asf and didn’t want to just break ties

    [19:15] that’s btw

[19:15] so we put heads together and came up with the mvr project

[19:15] i talked about great frustration w/ the level of dialog arond vws

    [19:15] i also have great frustration w/ futurists 🙂

[19:16] i’m kind of punk about calling myself that btw, i’m not sure what you all think of "futurists" 🙂

  133. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:16] ot

  134. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:16] i didn’t want to just write papers that no one would read

  135. Margot Abattoir

[19:16] like faith popcorn, brain reserve…

  136. Baba Yamamoto

[19:16] it’s hard to be a futurist in these times… by the time you get your essay online it’s old news

  137. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:16] and record podcasts that no one would hear, etc

[19:17] john smart at asf and i conceived of this idea of a "futurepedia"

[19:17] that works kind of like wikipedia

[19:17] where experts and lay people contribute in a kind of ideas market

  138. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[19:17] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  139. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:17] to chew out the possibility space of a given technology or kind of change

[19:17] we wanted to turn foresight into something that’s alive

[19:18] that leverages the environmental scanning of everyone out there on the web

[19:18] who are expert in their own areas

    [19:18] like you guys are

[19:18] and we wanted to get into technology roadmapping

  140. Kick Tinlegs

[19:18] experts still get it wrong far too often

  141. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:18] which is a kind of foresight tool where you get people together, including competitors

  142. Second Life

[19:18] Multi Gadget v1.49.3 by Timeless Prototype

  143. Williem Leandros

[19:19] Kick: someone has to figure out how to mesh the ideas with the everyday demands of living.

  144. Kick Tinlegs

[19:19] watch old episodes of ‘Tomorrows World’ from England – you” see what i mean

  145. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:19] to share ideas in a safe place, identify common challenges, uncertainties, and expectations

  146. Second Life

[19:19] SignpostMarv Martin used to watch that all the time

  147. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:19] now, i was becoming such a "metaverse head" 😉

[19:19] thati i used my gravity to warp our project towards virtual worlds

[19:20] we’re really just at the very beginning

  148. Baba Yamamoto

[19:20] need to get the preliminary work on the roadmap online… i’ve seen the general outlines ;0 there’s got to be more tho

  149. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:20] but i have to say something that i think is very intersting here:

[19:20] the interest in what we are doing is OVERWHELMING

[19:20] really by that i mean

[19:20] not just us w/ the project

[19:20] i mean what we’re all doing here in these spaces

[19:21] i very much feel like i’ve grabbed the lightning rod here

[19:21] i’m actually rather frightened of where this may lead

  150. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:21] aahaa

  151. Johnny Ming

[19:21] I agree, I think the biggest thing to come out of the summit was actually the demonstration of Open Croquet.

  152. otakup0pe Neumann

    [19:21] Hopefully not death.

  153. Baba Yamamoto

[19:21] it’s the end of the world

  154. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:21] but the roadmap really sets out to do two things, two things that are most important to me

  155. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:21] it’s the singularity!

  156. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:21] one is to raise the level of dialog

[19:21] around vws and the 3d web

[19:22] and the other is to connect people and companies in meaningful, productive partnerships

[19:22] to develop for the metaverse and 3d web

    [19:22] hey, btw here

  157. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:22] straight text for 30 min… hehe

  158. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:22] how many people like the word metaverse and how many hate it? :p

  159. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:22] I like the word…

  160. Second Life

    [19:22] Peter Newell loves it

  161. Nethermind Bliss

[19:22] I am willing to use it until something else comes along 🙂

  162. Bjornson Donaldo

    [19:22] yaya metaverse

  163. Margot Abattoir

    [19:22] like it

  164. Maz Nowotny

    [19:22] haha we’re here right?

  165. Johnny Ming

[19:22] …and I’ll add to the question…… "how many metaverses are there?"

  166. Millions Brewster

    [19:22] Metaverse sounds dated

  167. otakup0pe Neumann

[19:22] I like the wrod betaverse.

  168. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:22] it’s intersting, the 3d web has to be called something

  169. Gleeb Gupte

[19:22] I lik it but it doesn’t conjure images for me.

  170. Vincent Doctorow

[19:23] Where does the word come from?

  171. Mark Barrett

[19:23] prefer betaverse at the moment

  172. Second Life

[19:23] Nethermind Bliss agress with Johnny

  173. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:23] everything that ducks around it is wimpy i think 😉

  174. Baba Yamamoto

[19:23] it came from some silly ideas but it’s got the right wordparts to make it compelling

  175. Pancho Vielle

[19:23] like it, but mainstream has to catch up

  176. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:23] but i’m not sure what ppl really think about metaverse

    [19:23] i like it 🙂

  177. Williem Leandros

[19:23] Metaverse works for me. It has roots.

  178. Vincent Doctorow

[19:23] I mean, I understand teh "verse" part but where the heck does "meta" come from?

  179. Mobile Widget

    [19:23] metaverse is cool

  180. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:23] anyway…

[19:23] the first order of our business on the map was to get folks together

    [19:23] we needed a basis

[19:24] so we held an invitational metaverse roadmap summit in may of this year

    [19:24] at sri in california

    [19:24] and it was wonderful!

[19:24] we brought together 50 ppl from around the space

[19:24] and encouraged peole to put their assumptions on the table

[19:24] johnny ming was there actually

[19:25] he can tell you 🙂

  181. Johnny Ming

[19:25] it was an awesome event

  182. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:25] and we recorded hours and hours and hours of audio

    [19:25] of everyone talking

[19:25] in small groups, guided discussion, scenario brainstorming

[19:25] and we transcribed it all and boiled it down to the inputs that you find on

[19:26] if you go there you’ll find a wiki w/ a bunch of different categories

[19:26] that we popped all the ideas into

[19:26] the space is so big that that inputs still look a little empty if you scroll them all, but that’s a *lot* of material

  183. Nethermind Bliss

[19:26] so sorry, I have to run for a bit…. hope to get a chat log if I can’t make it back! 🙂

  184. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:26] straight from the tap

    [19:26] later neth

  185. Zorn Cheetah

    [19:27] d

  186. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:27] we also have some candid audio up there of people giving their views on the future of virtual worlds

  187. Second Life

[19:27] SignpostMarv Martin should be posting the chat log shortly after the meeting is over

  188. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:27] how many ppl know the imagining the internet project?

[19:27] that was started in the 90s

  189. Poinky Malaprop

    [19:27] heard of it vaguely

  190. Millions Brewster

    [19:27] Not familiar with it.

  191. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[19:27] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  192. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:27] pew research ran around and interviewed all these digirati types

[19:27] about the future of the net

[19:27] and their thoughts are now sitting there in amber

  193. Poinky Malaprop

[19:27] what project came up with the Googlezon idea?

  194. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:28] we actually worked w/ those guys on the mvr summit

[19:28] and in a way are doing something similar

[19:28] inventoring all the ideas about the 3d web

    [19:28] sticking them in amber

[19:28] w/ the goal to paint over them every year

[19:28] and keep the foresigt alive over time

[19:29] what’s been occupying me for the last several months is writing up the synthesis into a report

[19:29] which will be out this fall

[19:29] it’s already a month later than i would have liked :/ so it goes

[19:30] but that will be out soon, and i hope for it to become the go-to document for the current lay of the metaverse land

[19:30] that companies and researchers and individuals can go to to find out what’s happening in this space

[19:30] and that we can create community around

[19:30] through meetings and an annual summit

[19:31] we’re a smal team, so i want to put out the call

  195. Millions Brewster

[19:31] Can there be a roadmap for an emergent system?

  196. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:31] if anyone is interested in joining us as a researcher, writer, or event organizer

  197. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:31] 🙂

  198. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:31] for the public mvr summit in 2007

  199. Peter Newell

[19:31] do you have a date and location yet?

  200. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:32] yes! i think there can be a roadmap for an emergent system

[19:32] here’s the thing on that

  201. Johnny Ming

[19:32] Well, it will be in the capital of the Metaverse…. Brooklyn.

  202. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:32] it’s not about specific predictions

  203. Second Life

[19:32] Mobile Widget wonders if it would be a live document of sorts?

  204. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:32] when we look out we can see these developments that have to happen

  205. Baba Yamamoto

[19:32] you have to lay out the groundwork to allow the emergent behaviors to occur

  206. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:33] user-creation in gamespace, virtualizing our lives in bits and pieces

[19:33] but how it’s going to work out in details, we don’t know

  207. Millions Brewster

    [19:33] Ah, yes.

  208. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:33] so we want to inventory as many possibilities as we can see

[19:33] and encourage people to create their way through it all intelligently

  209. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:33] heh

  210. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:33] those are my thoughts on that, anyway

  211. Second Life

[19:33] Multi Gadget v1.49.3 by Timeless Prototype

  212. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:34] it’s interesting, how many ppl here go to gaming or vw conferences?

    [19:34] anyone?

  213. Second Life

    [19:34] Peter Newell does now.

  214. Millions Brewster

    [19:34] VW?

  215. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:34] i go to a lot of these things

  216. moo Money

    [19:34] I plan to

    [19:34] haven’t been yet

  217. Maz Nowotny

    [19:34] nope 😦

  218. Lornadoone Poppy

    [19:34] I go to gaming cons 🙂

  219. Baba Yamamoto

[19:34] the wiki is lacking some things… i would like to contribute but the format seems too set

  220. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:34] maybe too many :p

  221. Zorn Cheetah

[19:34] i have been to gaming cons.

  222. Baba Yamamoto

[19:34] it doesnt feel like a working wiki

  223. Decka Mah

[19:34] yes that would be me

  224. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:34] baba, let’s get back to that, you’re right

  225. Mark Barrett

[19:34] im definitely going to start attending some

  226. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:35] i’ve noticed something pretty amazing about the gaming conferences i’ve been to

[19:35] a lot of the vw conferences

[19:35] it seems that a lot of ppl who run and frequent them are very wary of the future

[19:35] no one likes to talk about it!

  227. Cyrus Huffhines

    [19:36] preach it!

  228. Margot Abattoir

[19:36] wary of the future of vw’s?

  229. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:36] you can get kind of looked down at, or i’ve experienced that anyway

  230. Margot Abattoir

[19:36] or in the future in genera

  231. Baba Yamamoto

[19:36] nobody can look down at you man

  232. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:36] wary about change happening in the space, yes

  233. Margot Abattoir

    [19:36] kk

  234. Baba Yamamoto

[19:36] you’re a freakish person of extreme height

  235. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:36] afraid of sounding foolish maybe

[19:36] also many people have been through a kind of "3d web" hype cycle

[19:36] and it didn’t pan out

  236. Nemo Benmergui

[19:36] not RPG/card/boardgame player conventions. I think SNOOPYBrown is referring to computer game designer conferences.

  237. Millions Brewster

    [19:37] In the early 90s?

  238. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:37] so there’s a wisdom there, but too much hesitation

    [19:37] yes, in the 90s w/ vrmls

  239. Baba Yamamoto

[19:37] man 3D web had no game plan in the 90s

  240. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:37] that’s a very common reference point

  241. Baba Yamamoto

[19:37] they were all like OH COOL LOOK!

  242. Williem Leandros

[19:37] Snoopy: You’ll note that 3D headmounted displays are hard to come by these days.

  243. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[19:37] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  244. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:37] and then nothing happened

  245. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:37] a lot of ppl saying things like sl are vrml 2.0

  246. Kyle Childs

[19:37] definitely just spilled milk all over my mouse and key board

  247. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:37] i know, check my 3d glasses!

  248. Williem Leandros

[19:38] Snoopy: And all that lawnmower man business fizzled. I’m rather disappointed in that. Immersion – even a poor attempt at immersion, was something I was very excited about.

  249. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:38] i mention this about the conferences, because there’s a vacuum here

  250. Kick Tinlegs

[19:38] SNOOP they are actually becoming cheaper

  251. Poinky Malaprop

[19:38] I’ve seen a fair amount of ‘the gaming genre is dead, we need to move on’

  252. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:38] that i’ve kind of been sucked into

[19:38] and that the roadmap is trying to fill

[19:38] and i guess what i want to say is

  253. Millions Brewster

[19:38] Yeah, I was going to mention Lawnmower Man, that’s a common reference point for this generation in terms of VR

  254. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:38] i need your help! lol

  255. Williem Leandros

[19:38] Snoopy: I think you may find that people are focused on making money today. Future talk doesn’t fit the risk/return ratio for that quarter.

  256. Baba Yamamoto

[19:38] i’m not so much excited about 3d web as I am about shared spaces…

  257. Kick Tinlegs

[19:38] For example there is a pair you can buy for your iPOD

  258. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:38] let me recap:

  259. Baba Yamamoto

[19:38] 3d web is just not compelling without other people

  260. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:39] metaverse roadmap = attempt to inventory the 3d web space

[19:39] of video games, virtual worlds, 3d creation, geospatial and web technologies

  261. Poinky Malaprop

[19:39] yes, but shared spaces are more compelling if the connect to the outside world

  262. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:39] through yearly meetings that procuce media and get inventoried in an annual roadmap update

[19:40] w/ the goal to advance the dialog around the 3d web

  263. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:40] Removed Upon Request

  264. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:40] and produce productive parnerships between companies and people

  265. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:40] standards

  266. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:40] Removed Upon Request

  267. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:40] standards is a big one, right?

[19:40] there are so many questions

[19:41] a big part about what we’re trying to do is get everyone on the same page

[19:41] even people on different pages

[19:41] high-lighting different viewpoints and assumptions

  268. Bruno Echegaray

[19:41] SNOOPY can you anticipate to us the main point of the roadmap TODAY and what are your bets for the future of the metaverse

  269. SignpostMarv Martin

[19:41] (standardising things sometimes makes screwups: HTTP_REFERER)

  270. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:41] a lot of the roadmap writing deals w/ ideas about how much 3d stinks, ha

    [19:41] for instance

    [19:42] yes, bruno:

[19:42] i break progress down into 3 categories usually:

[19:42] there’s the metaverse stuff like sl

[19:42] places where you can make anything you can imagine and they don’t have to refer to anything in reality

[19:42] there are mirror world technologies like google earth

[19:43] systems that simulate the real world in very high resolution

[19:43] and add spatial context to information

[19:43] and there are augmented reality technologies

[19:43] the mobile technologies that feed you information while you’re out and about, or that lay graphics over real spaces

  271. Kick Tinlegs

    [19:43] Yep

  272. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:44] those are seperate from video games and web stuff

[19:44] they’re three big areas that are unique to the metaverse, in how i view it

[19:44] and they’re all totally convergent

  273. Kick Tinlegs

[19:44] Well they are just applications at the end of the day

  274. Nemo Benmergui

[19:44] isn’t it a wrong metaphor to call the Metaverse the "3D Web?" Isn’t that like calling the Web a visual telephone?

  275. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:44] heh

  276. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:45] sorry, reading questions…

[19:45] there’s a great question about the future of the 3d web right? what kick is saying

    [19:45] "they’re all just applications"

  277. Decka Mah

[19:45] I think of 3D web as meaning the next version that follows on…like car came form carriage…similar purpose but better

  278. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:46] it’s true, but how much info about ourselves, how much meaning about the world, will offload to these spaces

[19:46] has anyone here read mirror worlds?

    [19:46] by david gelernter

[19:46] that’s the book that really really got me

    [19:46] years and years ago

[19:46] way before i ever got interested in vws

  279. Sushma Sixgallery

[19:46] SNOOPY, do you and your group envision a 4-D universe say, 50 yrs. from now?

  280. Millions Brewster

[19:46] I haven’t, but I think the term exocortex used by Charile Stross is a similar concept to what you are talking about

  281. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:47] where he talks about the coming need to simulate the planet in high detail just to keep up w/ the complexity

  282. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[19:47] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  283. Decka Mah

[19:47] Like the Star Trek Holodeck …inspiration from sci-fi for the future

  284. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:47] and he hypothesizes that once we’ve done that, we reach this point where the mirror worlds no longer track the real world

[19:48] as much as the real world responds to the much more valuable info and experiences happening in the mirror world

  285. Bruno Echegaray

[19:48] If I understand well (4.45 am here) you see 3 horses running: SL generic VW and Google Hearth, how will they run, who will win, will they converge?

  286. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:48] so will that happen? i don’t know 🙂 but we consider it

  287. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:49] Removed Upon Request

  288. Kick Tinlegs

    [19:49] 4th dimension is time – no?

  289. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:49] bruno, yes there is a question of convergence there, and a horse race too 🙂

[19:49] Removed Upon Request Resident X that’s one of the biggest points of conflict in the whole discussion so far

    [19:49] open source vs. proprietary

    [19:49] people get absolutely furious

  290. Bruno Echegaray

    [19:49] ah big questio

  291. Kick Tinlegs

[19:49] So SNOOP I wrote about this some time ago myself – Gibsonian Cyberspaces etc

  292. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:49] there is no consensus

  293. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:49] heh

  294. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:50] smart people on both sides

[19:50] how many here know the croquet project?

  295. Kick Tinlegs

[19:50] Do you think interfaces will abstract away from physical analogues?

  296. Bruno Echegaray

    [19:50] i know it

  297. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:50] they really did steal the show at the roadmap summit

  298. Second Life

[19:50] Ann Enigma raises a hand.

  299. Cyrus Huffhines

    [19:50] si

  300. Gayeton Ringo

    [19:50] agreed

  301. Millions Brewster

[19:50] I don’t see a reason to argue about proprietery or open source CLIENTS as long as the protocols are open

  302. Poinky Malaprop

[19:50] I think it’s interesting to note why OpenCroquet is not (yet) a run away success, like SL is

  303. Lornadoone Poppy

[19:50] How did they steal the show??

  304. Decka Mah

[19:50] Then there is the other future scenario…the horse racers are watched and someone invents an entirely new thing (eg. VHS and Beta) that takes the race to a new place (eg DVD)

  305. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:50] can i ask everyone interested while we’re all here to join the metaverseroadmap group to get into specific discussions?

  306. Johnny Ming

[19:50] It’s such a primitive system, but everyone was talking about it.

  307. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:50] Removed Upon Request

  308. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:51] i think we may turn the sl future salon towards that purpose specifically

  309. otakup0pe Neumann

[19:51] The croquet project is interresting.

  310. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:51] every one of those questions is so rich and deep they’re hard to touch here

  311. Katherine Watson

[19:51] i was in Croquet a year + ago .. has it changed much?

  312. otakup0pe Neumann

[19:51] It has a huge amount of potential.

  313. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:51] the croquet project for those that don’t know is an open source peer-to-peer 3d operating system

    [19:52] *shwoow* that was a mouthful 🙂

  314. Nemo Benmergui

[19:52] The important issue to me is this. Will anyone be able to start their own open source VR server and connect it to the larger Metaverse? Or will it be a locked-down proprietary system like Compuserve and Prodigy were?

  315. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:52] made by some of the smartest, most altruistic computer scientists around

  316. Baba Yamamoto

[19:52] croquet is seriously lacking in an interface designer

  317. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:52] they’ve got awesome technology, but no support

    [19:52] no energy

[19:52] no one builds for them

  318. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [19:52] Removed Upon Request

  319. Gayeton Ringo

[19:52] people should be looking at what happened to The Palace … to see how distributed communities on multiple servers can work …

  320. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:52] and they get angry when they see something like sl

  321. Baba Yamamoto

[19:53] there is no metaverse to connect to

  322. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:53] which they consider to be ‘merely the aol’ of the metaverse

  323. Baba Yamamoto

[19:53] there will only be the internet

  324. Johnny Ming

[19:53] They have so much enthusiasm, it’s a shame they can’t put it towards VC.

  325. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:53] and the people on the ‘aol’ side look back and call them dreamers and say they have no hope, ha

  326. Bruno Echegaray

[19:53] I remember at the beginning of Internet 12 yearsw ago it was AOL and Compuserve leading the way, but Internet did flow only when Mark Andreessen made Mosaic and Netscape the new Client, any similar situation here?

  327. Baba Yamamoto

[19:53] a srever is a server and if you know how to locate that server you can request it

  328. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:53] and right there is a perfect example of what we’re working to clarify w/ the roadmap

[19:54] how do we put those two things side by side

[19:54] the open source and commercial projects

[19:54] put them right in the same breath until you can’t talk about one w/out taking about the other

[19:54] until they have to come together

  329. Johnny Ming

[19:54] You know, when Doug Engelbart spoke to Walker and I, I got the sense that he has spent his entire career sort of bitter because the business world didn’t see instant profits in his ideas.

  330. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:55] i’m thinking about libsl here w/ baba 🙂

  331. Bruno Echegaray

[19:55] and speaking about RL customers they need the same methafore of Internet: Internet Intranet, Extranet with the usage of private servers

  332. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:55] hehe

  333. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:55] johnny, yea, there’s a lot of that

  334. Sushma Sixgallery

[19:55] i need to go, thank you and best wishes

  335. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:55] both sides are little babies lol 😉

  336. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:55] Muahahaha

  337. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [19:55] bye sushma

  338. Baba Yamamoto

[19:55] i want to have a libSL based server platform within the next 12 months

  339. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:55] there are also 2d vs. 3d camps which is wild to see

  340. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:55] 2d? 3d? it’s all the same

  341. Johnny Ming

    [19:56] Mario Bros for Life!

  342. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:56] some people who went around the block w/ vrml got hurt so bad they think it’s 2d until infinity out there

  343. Gayeton Ringo

[19:56] there is an example … a failed commercial online world .. that was a closed system … then went out of business and became a distributed open source network, whch was The Palace

  344. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:56] which is really interesting. again another divergent viewpoint

  345. Baba Yamamoto

[19:56] you cant build the web 2d and 3d on different concepts …

  346. Gayeton Ringo

[19:56] and much can be learned from that failure

  347. Baba Yamamoto

[19:56] they have to share a common base

  348. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:56] a set that we’re putting side by side

[19:56] so we can see them in the same light

[19:57] so let me see here:

  349. Baba Yamamoto

[19:57] we won’t have the 3d web tuntil it ceases to be a virtual world

    [19:57] heh

  350. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:57] takeaways before we go down more specific paths of conversation and split up:

[19:59] Is a part of that more meetings like this in SL?

  367. Poinky Malaprop

[19:59] I think the Kuurian Expedition is targeted towards very similar goals as the MVR, and I hope we can find good ways to collaborate

  368. Williem Leandros

[19:59] … and of course, world domination,.

  369. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[19:59] by briding video games, virtual worlds, 3d creation, geospatial and web technologies

    [19:59] bridging

  370. Baba Yamamoto

    [19:59] yay!

  371. Mobile Widget

    [19:59] I am interested

  377. Poinky Malaprop

[20:00] First 90 days are free in Wow – should be sufficient time for your research

  378. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:00] Muahahaha

  379. Johnny Ming

[20:00] no, baba, but if you attend you can get a windbreaker.

[20:00] you can join the mailing list at

    [20:00] join the inworld group

[20:00] we’ll get some meetings going to noodle on specific issues

  381. Baba Yamamoto

[20:00] not at all! i will have to totally immerse myself in their culture… 6 months undercover minimum

  382. Poinky Malaprop

[20:00] I’ve seen the same amount of energy that you mentioned before snoopy, and I think the challenge is how do we channel it in a productive direction

  383. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:01] like standards, open source, education, law

  384. Williem Leandros

    [20:01] Poinky: Project managers.

  388. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:01] w/ the spirit of the roadmap being a living foresight project

  389. Poinky Malaprop

[20:01] I think we should have a big in-world conference

  390. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:01] a new model of thinking forward in a constructive way

    [20:01] futurepedia style

  391. Williem Leandros

[20:02] Poinky: Entropy is a part of any collective group. You need visionary leadership to keep folks inspired to move forward, and specific targeted goals.

  392. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:02] and that’s where i’ll stop it here 🙂

  393. Poinky Malaprop

    [20:02] Snoopy is pretty visionary

[20:02] get a few folks on there

  401. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:03] i’m sorry if i bored anyone!

  402. Decka Mah

[20:03] What about a game like the Ludium conference substitutes ?

  415. Millions Brewster

[20:04] Are there going to be more of these meetings in SL, or is this just a one off thing?

  423. Baba Yamamoto

[20:05] poinky when is the next meeting?

  425. Peter Newell

    [20:05] Austin, TX

  426. Cyrus Huffhines

    [20:05] Chicago, Chicago

  427. Bruno Echegaray

[20:05] anyway until people will not agree about the standards and open sw the 3Dweb or how you what call it will not flow, the history (telephone, internet, etc.) is teaching us that

  428. Williem Leandros

    [20:05] Brooklyn

  429. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:05] SF

    [20:05] bigger hall

  430. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:05] i’ve suggested co-locating it w/ the mvr summit

    [20:05] so we’re considering that

  431. Gus Plisskin

[20:05] NOT HOUSTON under any circumstances. I live there. It stinks. 🙂

  432. Lornadoone Poppy

    [20:05] Austin 🙂

  437. Ralph Silversten

[20:06] What about Serious Games Summit?

  438. Cyrus Huffhines

    [20:06] I like Millions’ idea

  439. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:06] you know what’s unfortunate here

[20:06] i *wish* it were easier to do things outside the bay area

  440. Gus Plisskin

[20:06] St. Louis has a lot to see. Austin or San Antonio if in TX

  441. Mobile Widget

    [20:06] Convention… Chicago! 🙂

[20:06] We at Penguicon would be proud to host you.

  457. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:07] it’s almost sick

  458. Cyrus Huffhines

[20:07] Hey, you can get forty dollar round trips from chicago to Islip for nyc so nyc is no problem either

  464. Pancho Vielle

    [20:08] stanford. Yes!

  465. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:08] that’s a beautiful place

[20:08] i found everyone there very nice too

  466. Bruno Echegaray

    [20:08] too far from europe

  467. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:08] there’s also a great spirit of innovation there

  468. Gus Plisskin

    [20:08] lol, Baba

  469. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:08] stanford would be good

    [20:08] i’ll go there

[20:09] we can talk about it

    [20:09] yes

  474. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:09] that would be excellent

    [20:09] like i said we’re very open

  475. Decka Mah

[20:09] West Coast locations let Australians come…the metaverse is not the USA-verse

  476. Nemo Benmergui

[20:09] If you know anyone within a few hundred miles of Detroit involved in the Metaverse or OpenCroquet, we would love to have a presentation on such topics at Penguicon.

  492. Williem Leandros

[20:11] Snoopy: Is that contrary to NYC, where you have a quick death in front of a queens MTA bus?

  494. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:11] williem, yes it is!

[20:12] gosh, i’m sure i missed a bunch of questions

[20:12] does anyone have any other high-level questions about the map?

  495. Baba Yamamoto

[20:12] damn snoopy is like a stone

    [20:12] he wont laugh

  496. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:12] about the format we’re using?

    [20:12] yes, the wiki

  500. Poinky Malaprop

[20:12] being setup to discourage participateion

  501. Bruno Echegaray

[20:13] anyway I want to thank you Snoopy and the Kurrian for updating us in this important field

  502. Williem Leandros

[20:13] Snoopy: Earlier someone brought up the issue of getting people into actionable working groups. Maybe I missed your reply…?

  503. Baba Yamamoto

[20:13] i’m listening to you type… i heard that unenthusiastic "lol" keystrike

  504. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:13] ok, on the whole mvr on the web is very web 1.0, which is a problem

[20:13] we’re looking to hire a web wizard

[20:13] it is not yet looking alive

  505. Baba Yamamoto

[20:13] the wiki even is 1.0… it’s totally hobbled

  506. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:13] everything there is manually done right now

  507. Pancho Vielle

[20:13] what is the native roadmap? Word docs?

  516. Gilbert Frederick

    [20:15] bye snoopy

  517. Gus Plisskin

[20:15] I like mediawiki, but it keeps having security issues

  518. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:15] the ideas are compelling, but it ain’t a flickr on the inputs yet, that’s for sure

[20:15] though that is a goal

  519. Poinky Malaprop

[20:15] I think we should probably close the formal session

  520. Pancho Vielle

[20:15] first release, don’t worry about it being ugly. the whole internet was defined in ugly RFCs

  521. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:20] lol

  578. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:20] i’ve learned so much about business and technology and people and politics from this world

[20:20] much better than any classroom i’ve been in

[20:20] and it’s all the meta lessons

  579. Williem Leandros

[20:20] Bruno: That’s an interesting challenge, since you must turn something theoretical into a product. That very thing fascinates me on a regular basis in SL.

  580. Mobile Widget

[20:20] and often more personal – oddly

    [20:20] 🙂

  581. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:20] not like taking classes inworld, but just watching and participating in everything

    [20:20] bruno yes

  582. Baba Yamamoto

[20:21] interesting thought on the 3D web… how do we get 3d to the user?

[20:21] it’s gotta be robust and standard

  583. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:21] and that’s something very interesting that i get w/ electric sheep too, watching that develop on the ground

  584. Williem Leandros

[20:21] Baby: we have to make it friendly and intuitive

  585. SignpostMarv Martin

    [20:21] VRML! 😛

  586. Williem Leandros

    [20:21] Baba: (sorry, typo)

  587. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:21] VRML can die

  588. moo Money

    [20:21] I ❤ SL

  589. Decka Mah

[20:21] Snoopy have you considered including a YOUTH perspective into the input …teenagers have new paradigms compared to even those in their 20s and 30s?

  590. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:21] SL is…

    [20:21] i dunno

  591. Jade Lily

    [20:21] I ❤ Moo

  592. moo Money

    [20:22] ❤

  593. Baba Yamamoto

[20:22] is streaming UDP the right way

  594. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:22] decka, that is such a wonderful idea!

  595. Jade Lily

    [20:22] ..

  596. Piett Hesse

[20:22] you guy’s are needing MetaverseCamps like Barcamps to get brainfuel

  597. Williem Leandros

[20:22] Baba: I think the platform power is prolific. SL is fairly easy to get to – but there is a substantial learning curve.

  598. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:22] no i really hadn’t explicitly

  599. Jade Lily

    [20:22] … and SL

    [20:22] hehe

  600. moo Money

[20:22] a teen gridder found me on IRC yesterday and was raving about machinima

  601. Baba Yamamoto

[20:22] it’s not about the interface

  602. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:22] though we all know we need to watch how kids take to it

  603. Baba Yamamoto

[20:22] i’m talking about the information sent to the user

  604. moo Money

[20:22] he inspired me to apply for access to TG

[20:22] so that I can teach them machinima

  605. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:22] because that will be how the world works in 15 years 🙂

  606. moo Money

    [20:22] wish me luck!

  607. Jade Lily

    [20:22] cool!

  608. Williem Leandros

    [20:22] Baba: Elaborate

  609. Baba Yamamoto

[20:22] the description language used for 3d web

  610. Jade Lily

    [20:22] good luck!!

  611. Bruno Echegaray

    [20:22] hi moo

  612. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:22] like VRML

  613. Williem Leandros

    [20:22] Baba: Ah.

  614. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:22] hey jade!

  615. moo Money

    [20:22] hey Bruno!

  616. Jade Lily

    [20:23] hey JP! 🙂

  617. Williem Leandros

[20:23] Baba: well, we certainly have a lot of examples to examine. VRML is but one.

  618. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:23] hum

  619. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:23] what do you make of ajax3d?

  620. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:23] there are a lot of vrml folks coming back around the mountain now

[20:23] like tony parisi who does ajax3d

  621. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:23] what’s vrml 2.0′

[20:23] they gave it a new name

  622. Jade Lily

    [20:23] what’s ajax3d?!

  623. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:23] w/ x3d and media machines

  624. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:23] x3d

    [20:23] that’s it

  625. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:23] take a look at when you can

  626. Baba Yamamoto

[20:24] i have to look into their docs

  627. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:24] "a web 2.0 virtual world" as it goes

    [20:24] all in the browser

    [20:24] *very* primitive right now

  628. Second Life

    [20:24] Jade Lily looks

  629. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:24] What about mashing up the handy bits of existing formats into one nice new one- XHTML + SL 3D Data + etc ?

  630. Jade Lily

    [20:24] oh! i’ve seen this

  631. Bruno Echegaray

[20:24] tony parisi and his friends want to use x3d and media machines for seting up virtual exibitions

  632. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:24] personally, i’m betting on the environments like sl, or leaning that way for sure

  633. Jade Lily

[20:24] okay, i follow you now

  634. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:25] the superst 3d envirnoments

  635. moo Money

    [20:25] brb

  636. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:25] that will eat all those things and become the new desktops

  637. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:25] problem

  638. Williem Leandros

[20:25] Signpost: that’s where I was going with this. We’ve played in the protocol space, there should be sufficient information there to understand the why’s and why not

  639. Baba Yamamoto

[20:25] browsers were not designed with this kind of content in mind

[20:25] i’m haning up on it

  640. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:25] the new operating systems or whatever we’ll call them

  641. Poinky Malaprop

[20:25] I need to get some sleep – talk to everyon later!

  642. Bruno Echegaray

[20:25] anyone can say to me where Sun will make the conference in SL this week?

  643. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:25] take a look at this post that avi bar-zeev did

  644. Williem Leandros

    [20:25] Night Poinky.

  645. Baba Yamamoto

[20:25] sun is not worth watching

    [20:25] they suck

  646. Maz Nowotny

    [20:25] later Poinky

  647. Poinky Malaprop

    [20:25] It was earlier today

  648. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:26] avi is a friend who co-created keyhole which became google earth

  649. Poinky Malaprop

    [20:26] bye all

  650. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:26] and he worte the original sl 3d rendering engine

  651. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:26] the internet wasn’t designed with VoIP in mind, but that works fine

  652. Bruno Echegaray

    [20:26] bye poinky

  653. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:26] night poinky!

  654. Piett Hesse

    [20:26] bye Poinky

  655. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:26] umm

  656. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:26] oh shoot, where’s that link

  657. Baba Yamamoto

[20:26] that’s got nothing to do with 3d web and current state browsers

  658. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:26] pushing technology into something it wasn’t designed for works, as long as it’s made well

  659. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:26] it’s on somewhere

[20:26] second page of posts now

  660. Baba Yamamoto

[20:27] VoIP has its own protocol and client interface

  661. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:27] what do you think of

  662. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:27] avi interviewed me, tony parisi, and vlad something from the firefox team

[20:27] and vlad talked about firefox and 3d

  663. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[20:27] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  664. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:27] what they’re thinking there w/ gecko

  665. Baba Yamamoto

[20:27] my browser is hanging on poorly imlemented code for the rendering of this virtual space

  666. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:27] kaneva is culturally strange to me

  667. Peter Newell

    [20:28] yes, quite.

  668. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:28] i think the really succesfull efforts will be as much about the ppl as the technology

  669. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:28] I’m not sure who or what they want to be….

  670. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:28] just a thought here

  671. Williem Leandros

[20:28] Baba: the quality of whatever retrofit plugin comes down the pipe to 3D-enable browsers is a process issue, not a show-stopper.

  672. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:28] i think it’s part of why linden lab has been so successfull

    [20:28] they are engaged

[20:28] i don’t see kaneva actively engaged yet

[20:28] i’m not sure who they are

  673. Peter Newell

[20:28] a virtual world for all the myspacers on hot or not.

  674. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:28] it is a showstopper..

[20:29] it stopped the show for me

  675. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:29] they’re off to the side right now

    [20:29] maybe they’ll come in

  676. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:29] Linden Lab have rich friends 😛

  677. Baba Yamamoto

[20:29] it’s got to be streamlined

    [20:29] and just work

    [20:29] every time

  678. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:29] they’re trying for more of the youtube of games play i think

  679. Williem Leandros

    [20:29] Baba: what’s your ideal?

  680. Jade Lily

    [20:29] "Explore your world"

  681. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:29] lots of other things want to and can eat that for lunch

  682. Williem Leandros

[20:29] Snoopy: We wouldn’t have GooTube without Flash.

  683. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:29] so it will be interesting

[20:29] i will try to get them to the roadmap summit next year

[20:29] which is another thing that would be helpful

  684. Baba Yamamoto

[20:30] a browser designed from the ground up to deal with standard 3d documents as well as the flat web style

  685. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:30] recommended speakers and companies to represent

[20:30] this year we were short on open source projects

[20:30] no one from the open source metaverse project could make it

[20:30] libsl was but a dream

  686. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:30] hehe

  687. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:30] croquet really carried that weight

[20:31] thankfully they did it with authority 🙂

  688. Jade Lily

[20:31] how is the metaverse project doing?

  689. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:31] nobody uses croquet…

[20:31] it’s just too derned hard

  690. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:31] nope, they really don’t yet baba

  691. Williem Leandros

[20:31] Baba: Well, perhaps once we figure out what the code looks like, we can sneak it into a Firefox build.

  692. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:31] it needs an interface

  693. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:31] i spoke w/ some ppl at google about it

  694. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:31] that’s cool snoop

  695. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:31] fun thing about this kind of work is you get to travel around and have fun backroom conversations :p

  696. Baba Yamamoto

[20:32] firefox was not designed from teh ground up for 3d

  697. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:32] and when you’re a generally free culture guy like me you get to come back and share them w/ ppl 🙂

  698. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:32] what makes it hard baba?

  699. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:32] the google map team actually has higher-ups on the croquet board

  700. Piett Hesse

[20:32] busy ? The meeting is almost over. I’ll go to sleep. Had a good talk with Vlinder.

  701. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:32] mike jones i believe is on there

[20:32] but others there don’t believe in it

  702. Baba Yamamoto

[20:32] loradoone i couldnt even get it to work

  703. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:32] take that for whatever it’s worth

    [20:32] not the be-all end-all

  704. Baba Yamamoto

[20:33] the interface lerning curve is probably 5x that of SL

  705. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:33] but interesting. they see other avenues to the same end

  706. Bruno Echegaray

[20:33] so you bet google will team with croquet and not with sl?

  707. Baba Yamamoto

[20:33] they don’t need to team up with SL

  708. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:33] didn’t sound like they wanted to

[20:33] they’re totally interested in it though

  709. Williem Leandros

[20:33] Baba: I think luring some disenchanted UI researchers would be helpful here.

  710. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:33] possibly the freakiest experience:

  711. Baba Yamamoto

[20:33] we’re submitting the stuff to host an intern from the summer of code

  712. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:33] i was telling their team about sl

[20:34] this is their map and google earth team

    [20:34] and i mentioned slboutique

  713. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:34] heh

  714. Jade Lily

[20:34] google isn’t known for their wonderful UI skills

  715. Bruno Echegaray

[20:34] we have to focus what google is going to do in the future, they are really the leaders

  716. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:34] which is the sheep’s online marketplace

  717. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:34] google’s UI is fine

  718. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:34] and they were like"

    [20:34] :

  719. Jade Lily

    [20:34] it’s functional 🙂

  720. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:34] For a new technology to suceed, everyone has to be able to use it, or as many people as possible. My barely computer-literate mother can just about get her head around SL, and Croquet isn’t something I’d want to touch with a 20 foot barge pole, so (cont)

  721. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:34] "holy freaking cow! how do we get sl objects on our 3d warehouse tomorrow?!"

[20:34] "it’s not all about sketchup"

  722. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:34] I’d have to side with SL kicking Croquet’s ass

  723. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:35] which is wild to hear that

  724. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:35] hehe

  725. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:35] you know, i made this sloogle shirt a while ago

  726. Baba Yamamoto

[20:35] SL’s objects would convert to sketchup with no problem

  727. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:35] just when google earth came out i think

  728. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [20:35] Removed Upon Request

  729. Pancho Vielle

[20:35] So what did they tell you to do with SLBoutique?

  730. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:35] and i’ve been shocked by the things they’ve done in the vw space

[20:35] they wanted all the slb content on their 3d warehouse!

  731. Baba Yamamoto

[20:35] they cant give gooogle anything

  732. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:36] granted it was a very informal conversation

    [20:36] same one about croquet

  733. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:36] heh

  734. Cyrus Huffhines

[20:36] what have you found most shocking?

  735. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:36] they brought over some engineers to noodle on it

  736. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:36] what google could do

[20:36] was open space in SL

  737. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:36] someone had checked it out and explained the prim system

  738. Baba Yamamoto

[20:36] to allow people to submit their stuff to google’s warehouse

  739. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:36] and everyone kind of cooled down

[20:36] most shocking = sketchup and the 3d warehouse

  740. Baba Yamamoto

[20:36] they can export the SL objects to a standard 3d format

  741. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:37] 2nd most shocking is the convergence on collada as a 3d standard that they’re now pushing

  742. Bruno Echegaray

[20:37] what are the URl to go in deep abouth SL and sketchup?

  743. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:37] which looks like it may have tipped the scales

    [20:37] will use collada

  744. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:37] is anyone from open croquton SL?

  745. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[20:37] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  746. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:37] i’ve already seen sketchup models in a beta world there

[20:37] pulled right form teh warehouse

    [20:37] larnadoone: yes

[20:37] i’ve seen sl avatars in croquet

    [20:37] very primitive

    [20:38] squeaky even 🙂

    [20:38] but it’s there

[20:38] i don’t underestimate google and the like in the vw space at all

  747. Bruno Echegaray

[20:38] can anyone provide me URLs for SL and sketchup conversion?

  748. Baba Yamamoto

  749. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:38] what they’ve done to the map and geospatial worlds is extraordinary

  750. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:38] or something like that

  751. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:39] i gave a talk at the oreilly where 2.0 conference

[20:39] called "second life and google earth mashups" lol

[20:39] they actually asked me to name it that

  752. Pancho Vielle

[20:39] heard your podcast. Good stuff

  753. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:39] to add "mashup" which i think is hilarious!

[20:39] anyway that conference was like

[20:40] a bunch of geospatial dudes all asking themselves:

  754. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:40] Snoopy, will you report talk about just how much economic impact vw are having?

  755. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:40] "um, when did google start doing maps and why have they changed *everything*???"

    [20:40] lol

  756. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [20:40] Removed Upon Request

  757. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:40] from my pov anyway, what i could gather

  758. Williem Leandros

[20:40] Basically taking GIS and making it mainstream.

  759. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:40] lornadoone:

  760. Vintnerd Oud

[20:40] well… kind of – GIS is far more than a pretty picture with stick pins

  761. Williem Leandros

[20:41] Not just for civil engineers and tax assessors anymore.

  762. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:41] the global market for stuff in vws is up at a billion $ by some estimates

  763. Williem Leandros

[20:41] Vintnerd: agreed, but we’re just getting started.

  764. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:41] it’s dodgy

[20:41] and it depends on how far you draw your circle

  765. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:41] heh

  766. Pancho Vielle

[20:41] don’t forget they opened an api

  767. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:41] hmmm – I’m a master’s student and studying some of this…can we chat about that later on?

  768. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:41] if you look at games, we all know they’re rivaling hollywood, which in its way really does run the world lol

[20:42] so then you’re really talking big time numbers

  769. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:42] hehe

  770. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:42] i play xbox live quite a bit

[20:42] and watch it w/ second life eyes

  771. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:42] i need to get a 360

    [20:42] oh damn

  772. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:42] so that includes the gaming world?

  773. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:42] and the metaverse stuff that’s going to pop on the consoles is just ridiculous

  774. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [20:42] Removed Upon Request

  775. Baba Yamamoto

[20:42] i’ll charge it to MVR

  776. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:42] I am anxiously awaiting the wii 🙂

  777. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:42] they *lack* second life

  778. tiny Newt

    [20:42] whisper hey

  779. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:43] lornadoone: that billion does not include video games

[20:43] but things of value in mmo games

  780. Williem Leandros

[20:43] Snoopy: Given the popularity of SIMS online.

  781. Lornadoone Poppy

  801. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:44] and you can create web based games for it that you play w/ the wiimote

[20:44] usiing libsl stuff you can do things w/ sl on the web

[20:44] so you have sl on the wii 🙂

  802. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:44] yep

  803. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:45] phantasy star online is cool

  818. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:46] daniel james from puzzle pirates was at the roadmap summit

  819. Baba Yamamoto

[20:46] the puzles got boring and they never added any new ones

  820. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:46] right- Nintendo has always been so proprietary….even flash ajox support seems…odd…for them

  821. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:46] he’s a great guy

[20:46] he was very much an anti-3d web guy though

  822. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:46] he gave a lot of great criticism

  827. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:46] i always give criticisms

  828. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:46] he’s made his wager on 2.5 worlds that are sticky

  829. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:46] that’s what i do best

  830. Lornadoone Poppy

[20:46] (shouldn’t have said that alowed, but Daniel does wear a 3 cornered hat 🙂

[20:47] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  835. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:47] yea, baba, get sl on the wii please 🙂

[20:48] i’ll go ahead and make a prediction

[20:48] sl will indeed be on the consoles

  836. Baba Yamamoto

[20:48] if we can get a wii development platform in mono

    [20:48] then

  837. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:48] control the avatar with the nuncuka, and a big ass sword with the Wiimote

  838. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:48] weeks ?

    [20:48] Muahahaha

  839. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:48] those things have 6 year life-cycles and all heck has broke loose in a.) either the companies making them open

[20:48] or b.) people just opening them up

    [20:48] they’re computers plain and simple 🙂

  840. Baba Yamamoto

[20:49] the problem will be what development is like on the wii

    [20:49] i dont know yet

  841. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:49] very powerful computers for crunching 3d graphics i might add 😉

  842. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:49] ^has heard that the OS for the Wii will continue to be updated throughout it’s life cycle

  843. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:49] baba, have you played w/ xna?

    [20:49] on the xbox?

  844. tiny Newt

[20:49] whisper… this is way over my head…

  845. Baba Yamamoto

[20:49] our client developed by adam zaius is going to be xna

  846. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:49] tiny, bring us back to your world then 🙂

  847. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:49] and we’re stubbing tao.xna

  848. Maz Nowotny

[20:50] do you think that requiring a keyboard to play will be a problem for SL on console? how many ppl want to shell out more $

  849. Baba Yamamoto

[20:50] microsoft told us that we should port it if we want

  850. tiny Newt

    [20:50] Sorry

  851. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:50] i’m not a techie i just play one on sltv 🙂

  852. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:50] so

  853. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:50] yea?

  854. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:50] tao.xna OGL

    [20:50] for mono

    [20:50] on linux

  855. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:50] so there’s been conversation w/ ms then

  856. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:50] and mac

  857. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:50] not just working in the dark

  858. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:50] yeah

  859. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:50] fantastic

    [20:50] you know it’s funny

  860. Baba Yamamoto

[20:50] one of our guys who works on tao emailed the xna team

  861. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:50] this is another thing i’ve discovered

[20:50] how ubiquitous snow crash really is as a metaphor

  862. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:50] yeah

  863. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:51] it’s not just linden lab and sl

[20:51] xbox was championed by j allard

  864. Baba Yamamoto

[20:51] nothing to do with libSL they were just cool about having XNA running on mono

  865. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:51] ^hates his local library service for having every Neal Stephenson book BUT Snow Crash

  866. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:51] who wrote up a huge manual, a vision for xbox and the future of ms

  867. tiny Newt

[20:51] Piett, thanks for the invie I”l catch up with you later Ok?

  868. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:51] that was snow crash inspired. his gamertag is hiroprotagonis 🙂

    [20:51] bye tiny

    [20:51] see you

  869. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:52] yeah

[20:52] have your library order it

    [20:52] they will do that

  870. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:52] google earth is named after the earth program in snow crash

  871. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:52] it’s a public serivce

  872. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:52] i love that 🙂

  873. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:52] yes

  874. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:52] it’s just amazing to see a shared vision bubble up

[20:52] and at such high levels

  875. Baba Yamamoto

[20:52] and Neil Stephenson doesnt even share the vision

    [20:52] Muahahaha

  876. Pancho Vielle

[20:52] So what is the next Snow Crash? It was published in 1992

  877. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:52] but he’s our hero

  878. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:52] that’s probably been the biggest shock for me personally

  879. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:52] 1991

  880. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [20:53] Removed Upon Request

  881. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:53] neuromancer was great

  882. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:53] has been going from a 21-year old kid a few years ago who was kind of lurking around, guessing almost at the things i wanted to see happen

  883. Baba Yamamoto

[20:53] the metaverse struck a deeper cord though

    [20:53] with stephenson’s book

  884. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:53] and then progressively getting more experience and meeting everyone and finding out:

  885. Baba Yamamoto

[20:53] it really dug into people

  886. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:54] "wait, you guys all actually think this already? i don’t have to convince you???" lol

  887. Vintnerd Oud

[20:54] what about the negatives of stephenson’s books? his world is not a pretty place

  888. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:54] vintnerd:

  889. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:54] his world is not

    [20:54] the metaverse was great

  890. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:54] yea, sc is definitely distopian

  891. Cyrus Huffhines

[20:54] that is what I find so funny: so much is based on this dystopia

  892. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:54] it’s amazing and i guess it speaks to the metaverse vision

[20:54] that people just drop all that out

[20:54] they see through to the device

  893. Cyrus Huffhines

[20:54] like the real world, it depends on the people behind it

  894. moo Money

[20:54] eep I must be going

  895. Vintnerd Oud

[20:55] yes – escapeism, or new space?

  896. moo Money

[20:55] it was lovely seeing everyone

  897. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:55] not the culture neil imagined around it

  898. Mark Barrett

    [20:55] see you moo

  899. Baba Yamamoto

[20:55] the metaverse is all about people…

  900. Cyrus Huffhines

    [20:55] y tu

  901. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:55] bye moo!

  902. Baba Yamamoto

[20:55] the web was about the vast interconnected data

  903. Maz Nowotny

    [20:55] bye bye

  904. Baba Yamamoto

[20:55] web 2.0 is live data

[20:55] the metaverse is… connecting people

  905. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:55] baba, i think that’s a deep truth there

  906. Cyrus Huffhines

[20:55] technology being only as good as the people who wield it etc. And the interior world reflecting the ext

  907. Pancho Vielle

    [20:55] thanks all. goodnight

  908. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:56] good night pancho!

  909. Cyrus Huffhines

    [20:56] night

  910. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:56] we haven’t even started on the metaverse stuff yet

    [20:56] that’s what’s so exciting!

  911. Baba Yamamoto

[20:56] web 3.0 is just another way to sort our data

  912. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [20:56] Removed Upon Request

  913. Baba Yamamoto

[20:56] the metaverse is more than sorting data

  914. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:56] it’s rabbits in australia! lol

  915. SignpostMarv Martin

    [20:56] web 3.d 😛

  916. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:56] no we haven’t, Removed Upon Request Resident X! lol

  917. Baba Yamamoto

[20:56] web 3d is still just sorting data

  918. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:56] maybe just a little 😉

  919. Second Life

[20:57] SignpostMarv Martin was making a 3 point D joke

  920. Decka Mah

[20:57] rabbits in Australia? That went over my head…huh?

  921. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:57] hehe

  922. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:57] i think a killer thing that will appeal to a mass audience but is still laying low is the mapping stuff

  923. Cyrus Huffhines

    [20:57] ?

  924. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:57] the google maps of the world

  925. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[20:57] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  926. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:57] eheh

  927. Williem Leandros

[20:57] Baba: I agree with that viewpoint – sorting data vs. relationships.

  928. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:57] my point in that where 2.0 talk was that people in sl are literally living inside of a map

  929. Baba Yamamoto

[20:57] it’s funny… i’ve had enough data sorting to do me for a long time

[20:58] i want to meet the people who generate the ideas

  930. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:58] there are going to be so many location services developed in sl and vws that will port over to rl uses

[20:58] google earth just blows me away

    [20:58] i mean, sheesh

  931. Decka Mah

[20:58] You call this ‘living’…an interesting term for a cyber existience.

  932. SignpostMarv Martin

[20:58] data has entropy just as organisms do

  933. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:59] we got our first flat picture of the planet from space in 1969 i think

[20:59] and now we’ve got this interface to the whole planet

    [20:59] there it is

  934. Baba Yamamoto

    [20:59] hehe

  935. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [20:59] spin it around 🙂

    [20:59] it’s so… finite

  936. Williem Leandros

[20:59] Decka: Living in the sense that we’re projecting ourselves into another sensory space (illusory, yes, but conceptually valid.)

  937. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[20:59] once you’ve understood that little virtual thing you have to move on to the real metaverse, hehe

  938. Williem Leandros

[21:00] Snoopy: The metaverse is more than just representing any physical object in an easy-to-manipulate medium, sure.

  939. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:00] williem, one big trend in virtual reality has been away from immersion to social spaces that are better at communication and meaning than immersing you in an alternate reality

  940. Vintnerd Oud

[21:00] question/thought. If there was an MMO layer on Google Earth, who "owns" what? Can the metaverse exist on top a real place?

  941. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:00] that’s web3d Williem

  942. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:00] that’s really interesting

  943. Decka Mah

[21:00] Yet we constrain the possibilities in the virtual by the rules of the physical worl…only a few here don’t look like RW people

  944. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:00] remember, before vrml, there was jaron lanier and headsets

[21:01] isolating you into a personal cacoon

  945. Maz Nowotny

[21:01] and some RW ppl look stranger than some ppl here

  946. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:01] and that kind of became the fake future, the pretender future for a while

  947. Williem Leandros

    [21:01] Decka: I think that’s a comfort curve we’ll eventually get around.

  948. Lornadoone Poppy

[21:01] Thanks so much Snoopy – lovely and very interesting meeting 🙂

  949. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:01] old people die

    [21:01] that’s a fact of life

  950. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:01] thansk lornadoone, stay in touch!

  951. Baba Yamamoto

[21:01] they take their notions with them ;0

  952. Williem Leandros

[21:01] Snoopy: Not following what you mean by that trend – moving away from immersion to social spaces. I think I understand the statement, but not the value behind it.

  953. Decka Mah

[21:01] Maz have you seen my photos?

  954. Cyrus Huffhines

[21:02] or leave them with us

  955. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:02] they upload their stories, if not their minds, into the metaverse 🙂

  956. Maz Nowotny

    [21:02] Decka: nope

  957. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:02] lifelogs

  958. Peter Newell

    [21:02] that’s so Ender like :p

  959. Baba Yamamoto

[21:02] lifelogs are not metaverse to me.. they’re just more data

  960. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:02] i shudder to think of the google earth that records everything everyday

  961. Baba Yamamoto

[21:02] unless you’re interacting with people

  962. Williem Leandros

[21:03] Baba: Agreed, more static data, not really interactive.

  963. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:03] so we just trap time in amber like that

  964. SignpostMarv Martin

[21:03] lifelogs are just blogs with people’s actual memories as opposed to representations of their memories right ?

  965. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:03] baba, lifelogs = avatars 🙂

  966. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:03] hehe

  967. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:03] backdoor avatars

  968. Williem Leandros

[21:03] Snoop: Oh, a bit like that Robin Williams flick where everyone carries an implanted recorder?

  969. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:03] which one was that?

    [21:03] bicential man?

  970. Williem Leandros

    [21:03] Final Cut or something.

  971. Cyrus Huffhines

[21:03] yeah I am at a loss on which film?

  972. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:03] ah, never saw

  973. Williem Leandros

[21:03] He had the wooden computer setup – very cool looking.

  974. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:04] haha nice

  975. Williem Leandros

[21:04] ah… bugger. time for some 2d IMDB action

  976. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:04] i saw the first moouse

    [21:04] mouse

[21:04] looks like paul bunyan carved it

[21:04] it’s friggin made of wood!

  977. Baba Yamamoto

[21:04] no lifelogs = records… the metaverse is now-space not a record of 10 minuets ago

  978. Cyrus Huffhines

    [21:04] lol

  979. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:04] hilarious

  980. Williem Leandros

[21:04] OK, go see "The Final Cut"

[21:04] and then lust for a computer as interestingly constructed.

  981. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:04] it’s kinda cliche, but i love to think of those guys showing that to people and trying to explain the weight of what they were working on 🙂

[21:05] hehe, ok, i’ll try and remember to check it out

  982. Williem Leandros

    [21:05] It’s a good movie.

  983. Bruno Echegaray

[21:05] amazing conference Snoopy, you are very talented, ty to you and to everybody, have to go, 6.00 am here, let’s be in touch in the next days

  984. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:05] HEHE

  985. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:05] bruno, please do be in touch!

  986. Williem Leandros

[21:05] As far as the mouse reference, yes, it is sometimes very tough for others to grok the value of something out of context – the first mouse was like that.

  987. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:05] get some sleep!

[21:06] you’re a crazy man, late night metaverse conversations :p

  988. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:06] heh

[21:06] that’s why everyone should move to california

  989. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:06] ah, my roommate christian has just arrived home

  990. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:06] it’s only 9 pm

  991. Williem Leandros

    [21:06] What, and sink it?

  992. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:06] we live in the most nuts house here btw

  993. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:06] Muahahaha

  994. Bruno Echegaray

[21:06] sure we will be in touch

  995. Williem Leandros

[21:06] yah, I can hear you guys from here on the island. keep it quiet over there, Snoop.

  996. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:06] three roommates all working on different virtual worlds projects

  997. Vintnerd Oud

[21:06] do you ahve a roommate budhist or muslim as well, or just a christian

  998. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:06] lmao

  999. Vintnerd Oud

    [21:06] :^)

  1000. Baba Yamamoto

[21:07] how does that happen snoop?

  1001. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:07] one w/ mtv and virtual laguna beach

[21:07] one (christian) on the coding side

  1002. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:07] ah

  1003. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:07] and then i’m kind of the grease who talks over them all lol

  1004. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:07] all sheep?

1005. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [21:07] Removed Upon Request

  1006. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:07] just christian

1007. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

  1008. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:07] ah

  1009. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:07] eric is an mtver 4 life 🙂

  1010. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:07] oh cool 😉

  1011. Williem Leandros

    [21:07] he got his MTV.

  1012. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:08] we’re still going after the metaverse factory

[21:08] yea, ha, he did 🙂

  1013. Cyrus Huffhines

[21:08] wanted to ask about that!

1014. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [21:08] Removed Upon Request

  1015. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:08] we’ll be moving out soon, looking for that warehouse space

  1016. Cyrus Huffhines

[21:08] how is it going with the factory

  1017. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:08] Removed Upon Request Resident X, they’re doing some interesting things

  1018. Williem Leandros

[21:08] I’m actually interested in how many people they have in that VW they’re doing.

  1019. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:08] eric will be on the salon podcast this month

[21:08] when we take a field trip to virtual laguna beach

  1020. Mark Barrett

[21:08] I remember the MTV Tiki Land in the OnL!ve Traveler 3D spatial voice chat world.

  1021. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:08] that should be fun because we’ll all be on the couch w our laptops on our knees laughing 🙂

    [21:09] wow, really?!

    [21:09] what year was that?

  1022. Mark Barrett

    [21:09] 1996

  1023. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:09] wow, how was that?

  1024. Williem Leandros

    [21:09] heh

  1025. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:09] i’ve never seen anything about it

  1026. Williem Leandros

[21:09] man, I remember that year, when ISDN was considered "fast as hell"

  1027. Mark Barrett

[21:09] the software is now at

[21:10] the tiki land doesn’t exist anymore

  1028. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:10] i’m friendly w/ bruce damer who’s caught me up on that era quite a bit

[21:10] he wrote that book avatars in the 90s

  1029. Mark Barrett

[21:10] but it was basically an avatar in 3d space…very primitive compared to todays standards

  1030. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:10] that surveyed the vw space

  1031. Mark Barrett

[21:10] no 3d acceleration or anything

  1032. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:10] yea, those places are wild

  1033. Mark Barrett

[21:10] and you’d move around there… and you could just chat. push to talk. it was all voice, but it was spatial. something i’d like to see in SL as well.

  1034. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:10] it’s worth surfing betsy book’s site:

  1035. Williem Leandros

[21:10] Well, lets not forget Club Caribe of the old AOL days (or was it QLink back then?)

  1036. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

  1037. Decka Mah

[21:10] You should watch some old Star Trek episodes about the holodek. LOL

  1038. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:11] that inventories social vws, including some older ones

[21:11] god, larry roesenthal is a long time 3d man and told me

[21:11] that snow crash was almost cd-rom-only

    [21:11] no book

    [21:11] just a vw

[21:11] man that would have *sucked* lol

    [21:12] it’s funny

[21:12] i was talking to a vc guy who was asking me about vws and sl

[21:12] and when he asked about their history he absolutely loved that it had all been tried and failed

[21:13] he said the best ideas never go away. people want them early, they fail, and they get them on the follow-through

  1039. Williem Leandros

[21:13] Ah, does that mean he’ll be dumping copious amounts of money into another attempt at a failed model? seems to be all the rage today.

    [21:13] i’ll take that as a "yes"

  1040. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:13] i think vrml and those worlds represented the first stage of hope

[21:13] and hopefully we’ll see more continuity now. it certainly looks that way by all accounts

  1041. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:13] williem

  1042. Williem Leandros

[21:14] I agree. Getting them adopted by those who can sustain them (by paying for them in one form or another) is a much larger challegne.

  1043. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:14] dump money on me

    [21:14] please

  1044. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:14] williem, i think there should be money thrown at vws today

    [21:14] it’s interesting

[21:14] i think we have some hype hype going on

    [21:14] yes, that’s double order hype 🙂

1045. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [21:14] Removed Upon Request

  1046. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:14] or hype about how much hype there really is

  1047. Williem Leandros

[21:14] Baba: Try sitting down on 8th and 34th tomorrow and I might drop you a few bucks. 😉

  1048. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:14] everyone fears the bubble

1049. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [21:14] Removed Upon Request

  1050. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:14] i hear game developers fearing it too

  1051. Williem Leandros

    [21:14] Agreed.

  1052. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:15] i look at it very differently

  1053. Williem Leandros

[21:15] Snoopy: but he does have a point –

  1054. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:15] you need to pump up a space until it bursts

[21:15] so you can experiment in every nook and cranny

  1055. Williem Leandros

[21:15] Snoopy: monetizing these failed concepts today is much easier when your audience has had time to travel the learning curve.

  1056. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:15] go over every spot twice

  1057. Vintnerd Oud

[21:15] game developers fearing what? i missed something in the history

  1058. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:15] because you can’t have a revolution and miss something! not allowed lol

    [21:15] game dev’s fearing a video game/vw bubble

    [21:15] in investment money

  1059. Williem Leandros

[21:15] Snoopy: Really? Someone should mention that to the Americans.

  1060. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:16] that it would be bad for the industry

    [21:16] hehe

  1061. Baba Yamamoto

[21:16] bubbles are great… they foster innovation and then blow up getting rid of the crap

  1062. Williem Leandros

    [21:16] (disclaimer: I am american.)

  1063. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:16] i’ll tell them when i see them 😉

    [21:16] baba, i’m w/ you on that

  1064. Williem Leandros

[21:16] Baba: and the job market.

  1065. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:16] Muahahaha

  1066. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:16] williem i’m w/ you on that lol

1067. Removed Upon Request Resident X

    [21:16] Removed Upon Request

  1068. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:16] muahaha indeed!

    [21:16] i don’t think we’re even close!

    [21:17] that’s what’s so funny

  1069. Baba Yamamoto

[21:17] there is not abubble… there are hte precursors to a huge ammount of investment

  1070. Vintnerd Oud

[21:17] hmm… so how much is SL just part of the bubble and hype then?

  1071. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:17] but you can see this very clearly in sl

[21:17] we’re at a stage where there’s so much attention here

    [21:17] media attention

[21:17] that people are calling hype on it

[21:17] but it hasn’t yet even begun

1072. SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection

[21:17] Your currently configured channel for dspeak object "SignpostMarv has an unreliable internet connection" is:8080.

  1073. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:17] i dont expect a bubble for another 4 yrs 😉

  1074. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:17] and it’s much bigger than just sl

  1075. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:18] 4 is a good general number

  1076. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:18] these basic principles of user-creation, shared experience and collaboration

  1077. Williem Leandros

[21:18] Snoop: if it wasn’t for the dotcom bubble, and it’s burst, I wouldn’t be here today, so I’m not complaining. Every bust is itself full of opportunity.

  1078. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:18] sl is doing the metaverse from the inside out, there’s a lot of stuff out there working from the outside in

    [21:18] that i see

  1079. Williem Leandros

[21:18] baba: seems that way, but the media likes the bubble. they want the frenzy.

  1080. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:18] gotta pay for them railroad tracks and fiber optics

[21:19] ah, a christian prior is here!

[21:19] (he’s also sitting next to me in rl 🙂

  1081. Christian Prior

    [21:19] evening 🙂

  1082. Cyrus Huffhines

    [21:19] eeenin

  1083. Williem Leandros

    [21:19] 🙂

  1084. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:19] haha

    [21:19] rl back channel

  1085. Cyrus Huffhines

    [21:19] lol

  1086. Williem Leandros

[21:19] Snoopy: Agreed on the infrastructure, but remember how much "dark fiber" there was afterward.

    [21:20] Unrealized potential.

  1087. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:20] yes, becoming the google net last i looked 🙂

  1088. Williem Leandros

[21:20] And a failure to fit the product to the market.

  1089. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:20] yo

  1090. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:20] what’s happening w/ all that?

  1091. Williem Leandros

[21:20] Google = Borg Hive Queen. Can’t you people see that????

    [21:20] <laughs>

  1092. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:20] hehe, we’re looking for a savior is all

[21:20] the google geeks stumbled into the party at the right time

[21:20] we’ll see how much we can shape them 🙂

  1093. Williem Leandros

[21:21] We’re looking for a geek savior. Someone who can manage to hold to our ideals of technology advancement.

  1094. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:21] i buy that "don’t be evil" stuff

  1095. Second Life

[21:21] You have offered a calling card to Cyrus Huffhines

  1096. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:21] i’m sentimental 🙂

    [21:21] lol

  1097. Second Life

[21:21] Your calling card was accepted.

  1098. Williem Leandros

[21:21] No, I think a lot of us are still dreamers in that sense.

  1099. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:21] snoopy

  1100. Vintnerd Oud

[21:21] you do, or don’t. I think there’s a little footnote reference o thte phrase that includes "does not apply in certain countries with large profit potential"

  1101. Baba Yamamoto

[21:21] what does your resdearch into VWs and the metaverse entail?

  1102. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:22] my research involves tons of reading, tons of traveling, and tons of talking w/ people

  1103. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:22] hehe

  1104. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:22] then i write it down and share it w/ everyone

[21:22] i need to get better at writing

    [21:22] i’m still too shy w/ that

  1105. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:22] ugh writing

  1106. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:22] i’m much better to sit down w/ over a beer 🙂

  1107. Williem Leandros

    [21:23] Agreed

  1108. Vintnerd Oud

[21:23] or in the Austin Airport! 😀

  1109. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:23] or 8 as christina says 🙂

  1110. Baba Yamamoto

[21:23] i have a problem with being to succinct in my writing

  1111. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:23] lol

  1112. Williem Leandros

    [21:23] I’ll proof it for you. 🙂

  1113. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:23] haah

  1114. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:23] that’s christian

  1115. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:23] i’m still listening

  1116. Williem Leandros

    [21:23] to edit is divine.

  1117. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:23] Muahahaha

  1118. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:23] vintnerd who are you? lol

  1119. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:23] this is a riot

  1120. Vintnerd Oud

    [21:23] (tim holt)

  1121. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:23] lol!

  1122. Piett Hesse

[21:23] have you seen the Elephants Dream from the Orange Open Movie project ?

  1123. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:23] sorry i didn’t recognize you!

  1124. Vintnerd Oud

    [21:23] lol no owrries

  1125. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:24] sl has doubled the world’s population and must be stopped!

[21:24] tim is a beta developer usiing multiverse

[21:24] so swarm him w/ your multiverse questions :p

  1126. Vintnerd Oud

    [21:24] 😛

  1127. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:24] he’s stuck his hands in the guts

  1128. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:24] hehe

  1129. Peter Newell

[21:24] SNOOPY this has been awesome, thanks a ton.

  1130. Vintnerd Oud

[21:24] yes it’s an intereting space

  1131. Baba Yamamoto

[21:24] i still dont get what multiverse is doing exactly

  1132. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:24] actually did the sketchup import too!

  1133. Peter Newell

[21:24] I must be off, but will talk to you about mvr contribution soon

  1134. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:24] peter, thank you!

    [21:25] please stay in touch

  1135. Williem Leandros

    [21:25] nite Peter

  1138. Cyrus Huffhines

    [21:25] night!

  1139. Williem Leandros

    [21:25] Well,

  1140. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:25] i have to hop soon too

[21:25] my gf is very non-metaversal

[21:26] and wants to kill me when i stay up late in sl hehe

  1141. Williem Leandros

[21:26] along those lines, I need to log off and spend some time with the RL girl – else I’m liable to come in here and find my cinema display smashed to the bad kind of non-electric bits.

  1142. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:26] lame…

  1143. Williem Leandros

    [21:26] hahaha

[21:26] glad I’m not the only one with that issue

  1144. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:26] baba calls em like he sees em! 😀

  1145. Christian Prior

    [21:26] he’s got a point 😉

  1146. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:26] yep, i feel your pain my brother lol

  1147. Mark Barrett

    [21:26] hah

  1148. Williem Leandros

    [21:26] yah.

  1149. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:26] Muahahaha

  1150. Williem Leandros

[21:26] well, you pay your dues.

  1151. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:26] ;0

  1152. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:27] who here makes it to ny at all?

  1153. Williem Leandros

[21:27] so with that, it’s been a blast. Take good care folks.

  1154. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:27] cyrus was just out here

  1155. Williem Leandros

  1177. Cyrus Huffhines

[21:29] and flipping through mirror worlds

    [21:29] soary

  1178. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:29] it’s hilarious

  1179. Baba Yamamoto

    [21:29] Muahahaha

  1180. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:29] right next to carl sagan’s cosmic calendar

    [21:29] that’s how i roll

  1181. Mark Barrett

[21:30] you know, i dont know why but im listening to the shoutcast stream for some reason

  1182. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:30] lol

  1183. Cyrus Huffhines

[21:30] yessss! that is a great calendar. I won’t mention the spent needles and spoons

  1184. Mark Barrett

    [21:30] [[Laughing Out Loud]]

  1185. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

[21:30] omg i just looked at my ims

    [21:30] i have a bunch

[21:31] going to peck through and head out soon

[21:31] it’s been a long day in the metaverse 🙂

  1186. Mark Barrett

[21:31] is there an after after party?

  1187. Baba Yamamoto

[21:31] you’re at the after party

  1188. SNOOPYbrown Zamboni

    [21:31] haha, in brooklyn dude
